I'm thinking about mounting a Shinko 705 150/70X17 RADIAL to my 2010 scrambler. I already have the matching 110/80X19 Radial in the front with a 140/80X17 bias on the rear. I have heard many different things about mixing radial and bias ply tires, and the majority just said "dont do it," so I did, and I haven't noticed any ill effects towards performance, handling, ride, etc. I'd like to slap the 150/70X17R on but im not sure about clearance issues (chainguard/chain). Has anyone run this tire or this size tire on their scrambler? I'd hate to buy and mount a tire and it not have enough clearance.

There are no clearance issues in mounting a 150/70... people have been doing it for years...

The "issue" is that most manufacturers spec a 4" rim as the optimum size rim to mount their 150's on. The Bonnie (et al) rear rim is a 3.5". So in effect you're "putting the squeeze" on the side walls to the tune of 1/4" on each side... Not drastic, it does affect the profile of the tire (side to side, across the tread) slightly...

As far as the radial/bias tire thing goes... Continental Trail Attacks used to be solely Bias fronts & radial rears... I see they do currently make one radial front though... So if they manufactured and sold their tires in that configuration, , I would figure that they must know what they are doing...

Triumph has delivered a ton of bikes with a Metzler MEZ2 radial on the rear and a Metzler ME33 Lazer bias-ply on the front as OEM fitment.

Mine's a Bonnie, but I love my Shinko 712 - 150/70. Much grippier than the stock Metzlers and looks the part, since IMO the 130's look like moped tires. Also only my opinion, but after fitting the 110 front like you, handling seemed to return back to the stock form. I did notice a lag in handling response when I had the 150 coupled with the stock front. YMMV

Thanks for the insight yall, got one ordered and on the way. Ive ran Shinko 105's on a few bike and I love 'em. They are sticky enough for regular road use, (you've got a good amount of rubber to burn through before they're shot) and they grip alright on most of the caliche/gravel/dirt roads that are around south texas. STAY AWAY FROM MUD!
