2011 Scrambler Side Covers, etc.
I tried looking for similar posts but I didn't find any, although I didn't try very hard. I bought my Scrambler brand new and traveled a bit of a distance to get the matte khaki green color. I got #2 of 3 in southern CA. Although the bike is great looking, for the most part, there is a lot to be longing for. I noticed that 90% of the bike is well thought out and the last 10% was thrown together. I'll get into those in another post. As for my issue, when I bought the bike I noticed that the right side cover above the pipes was fairly loose. I always kept and eye on it and wondered if it could fly off. After 6k miles of commuting and road trips, I figured it was loose but good to go. On my way to work, about 6 weeks ago, there were heavy winds blowing and after being blown around the whole way to work, my side cover flew off and under a car. Crunch. I was completely in disbelief and annoyed because I never did anything to reinforce it. I was being hard headed and thought a product should be able to withstand heavy winds if it's designed to be exposed to such elements. I am not talking tornadoes but heavy enough winds to make you wobble a bit. After looking at a complete replacement of more than 15 parts and +$250 with limited matte khaki green covers, I decided to call Triumph. I talked with the customer service and went through it all with her and she said to email her the whole story, so I did and there was minor correspondence between us. She said she needed to talk to the tech and that she will get back to me. After a week I took the initiative and she said she was still waiting. After another week I sent another email and nothing, another email a week after and then a month later with nothing. I called today and had gotten the same girl and she dug up my email and talked with the tech. He said nothing can be done since it was bolted onto the bike....????!!!!!???? A Triumph tech doesn't know his own bikes? So i explained to the customer service girl that the Scramblers didn't have a securing bolt on the right side due to the high pipes. She talked again with the tech and then her manager and came up with nothing but a Sorry, try again. I figured with a shoddy design and a reputation to uphold that they would help me out here with at least a discount. +$250 to replace a loose-by-design part seems a bit ridiculous and seeing as how I bought it new with some upgraded parts for +$10k, I'd expect something more then a "sorry we don't cover that." I am still weighing my options and with bad gas mileage to boot, it's going to be tough on whether I'd stay with Triumph. I guess I am a bit more harsh and take the culture behind a product into consideration too. Anyone have any suggestions? I also bought the extended sucker warranty and am hesitant to strip her down to the bare naked essentials.
