Triple clamp compatability

Hi every one. I've done a bunch of seaches with different verbage to no avail. I thought i'd send Forchetto a PM on this but i think i forgot to hit the send button. So i decided to post here hoping he, and others, might see it and have some insight.

Some of you may know that i've been planning a clip-ons project for my bike. Part of that project is supposed to include a triple clamp swap so my brother can get my clamp that has risers and holes, and i can get his that has no holes and is better suiting for clip-ons.

The question is will a 2008 thruxton, and 2012 thruxton be a direct swap?

I don't think they've changed anything but i want to check before i put my life and safety in the mix.

Thanks all.

Not sure if they're a direct swap or not. I didn't notice any geometry changes listed, but you never can tell. The part number is different between the bottom triple clamps so it's hard to say if they're the same or not. It should be simple enough to remove the two clamps and measure them side by side to make sure they're the same.

i know there are differences in apperance. There are, naturally, holes for risers. The color and finish is different. There is a Triumph logo on the 08, and none on the 2012. other thank that i can't find anything stating weather or not there are or are not geometricly the same.

Yes, it's a direct swap once you do a couple of things - I swap mine back and forth.

This is what you need to do:

1 - Trim the upper fork covers (that support the headlamp brackets) by the thickness of the clip-ons (1", if I can remember, but please check). You can make spacers if you ever go back.

2 - Get some 1" o/d aluminum tube from the hardware store and make up sleeves for the 7/8" OEM clip-ons so that your 1" controls will work. I found that the sleeves were a good fit and the clamping force from the controls is sufficient to hold everything properly. (Note that you will need to use different bars with the earlier bike as it has 7/8" controls.

Enjoy!

ok awesome. I'm swapping out for new head lamp ears anyway. I'm relocating the ignition to a custom gauge bracket. My brother has already found bar sleeves for his 08 to 7/8 bars.

Thanks a lot for the info. What size socket do we need for the nut that secures the triple clamp? are there torque specs out there some place?

Two remaining questions are
1. Socket size for Top nut?
2. what did you use to take the space for the clip-ons on the fork as you mentioned?

Thanks we really appreciate it.

1. Top nut is 30mm

2. If you are swapping everything from an earlier Thruxton, swap the fork covers too - saves cutting. Mine were already cut by the previous owner and when I went back to the original bars I made spacers from some black 2 1/4 plastic drain pipe (don't laugh) - it's a bit tight, so I needed to use a round file to open out the inside diameter for a nice snug fit.

The brackets themselves are a different colour - silver on the earlier bikes, black on yours (same as the gauge bracket), so you just want to swap the tubes.
