Strange squeaking noise when taking off

Hey guys,

It's a fairly minor thing I think but I thought I'd ask anyway.

I've noticed lately than when my bike is reasonably cold (within the fist few minutes or riding) that if I take off from a standstill at a reasonable pace, the bike makes a weird groaning/screeching sound.

It sounds like it's coming from the left side of the motor, but I'm not sure.

It's almost sounds like the brake is stuck on and the bike is trying to move forward with the brake stuck.

Any ideas?

Mat

I occasionally get the same noise that you are describing. I do not know what it is, though. Only happens to me when the bike is cold. Then it's just a one second chirp/moan. My theory is something to do with the clutch plates sticking, but, my friend says that's not possible on a wet clutch. I never thought it was the breaks because the bike rolls normally with foot power. It only occasionally makes the noise when I start to apply power to go. I do not have clutch slippage.

Anyone have more knowledge?

I used to have a rear wheel bearing seal that would squeak like that on a Kaw I had.

It's the clutch. If you avoid pulling away quickly on a cold motor it won't happen. I've also found that it's less likely to occur with different brands of oil. It didn't happen when I used to use Castrol fully synth before BP got their hands on the brand and changed the formula. It rarely happens with the Shell Advance I currently use. It's not an unusual occurrence and you shouldn't concern yourself with it too greatly.
