Cool

My 12 se does this as well, no ryme or reason hot / cold etc....I though i had read somewhere on here that someone had traced the problem back to the starter relay...not sure if it was the relay itself or a connection issue. I havn't narrowed mine down yet not really a concern as it always starts.

Any idea if it was the starter relay or starter solenoid? The starter solenoid has a couple single wire spade connectors packed with dielectric grease that are very easy to pop off. I have wondered if that connection was whats being flaky.

I am not sure, i thought it was with the relay itself, however if the solenoid connections do come off easily...maybe a good idea to try and crimp/tighten those connections

I found this......

Forchetto wrote a great post about the starter relay.
I unplugged mine and plugged it back in (some people say to bend the relay pins a bit to make better contact).
Since I've done this I have not had a problem, it could be coincidence but so far so good.
Try it, it's free and takes a few minutes

2012 SE here and same problem. Thought it was me and didn't pay much attention to it. Will check the starter relay connections.

My '11 SE has had the same intermittent starting problem since new (10,500 mi, now). The dealer has replaced the solenoid and starter motor. I replaced the battery - which checkout fine - with a Shorai lithium-ion battery: Problem still exists, every 5 to 10 starts, hot-or-cold. 'Very frustrating.

Another data point --

I have a 2012 Bonne SE, purchased new in April, 2012. Have had this problem off/on since new, with no pattern that I have discerned. 1st time, attributed to low battery. Most recent time --
Friday, November 23, 2012. Battery fully charged. Temperature in garage where bike lives, about 55 degF. Bike started on first touch of starter button. Rode 3.5 miles @ 40-50 miles to Freeway, then 16 miles @ 70-75mph on Freeway to work. Parked bike. Worked a couple of hours, then went out to start bike to go to lunch. Hit starter button, bike clicked and nothing. Hit starter button a second time, bike fired right up. Rode about 6 miles to lunch. Ate (parked 30 minutes), bike fired right up @ first touch. Drove it two blocks, ducked into a store to run an errand, came back out. Bike fired right up @ first touch. Rode back to work. 3 hours later, came out, bike fired right up @ first touch. I have no idea why.

My 2012 T100 does the same thing and has ever since I bought it. It's currently at the dealers now having an oil leak being fixed and I'm not even going to mention it to them because I have no faith in them finding a solution. I've just been living with it and if I just hold the starter button in it will fire up after it fails first.

My Thruxton did this a couple of times....in my case there seemed to be a relationship between turning the ignition on before sitting on the bike and then putting the side stand up, then trying to start.

Mine kept turning half a turn and then stopping. I recycled the ignition by turning it off and on again and it was OK. I wonder if the ignition system gets a little confused sometimes?

I come from an era where we never had kick start or clutch lever sensors.

In my opinion, although they are safer (I can vividly remember nearly going through a shop window as a 17 year old on my RD125LC because I had forgotten to put my side stand up....), they are a bloomin' nuisance when they interfere with the start up of your vehicle, or go faulty.

And how on earth are you supposed to bump start your bike if the battery goes flat and you have a clutch sensor?????

My Wifes Honda CBF125 has a gear sensor, that cuts the engine if the stand is down when you drop it into first. Thats a much better idea!
