bonneville runs at idle/riding just stuts down

ok bought a 05 triumph bonneville crashed on the left side finally finished it, and riding for a week then when riding with a passenger 4 miles away from home it just shut off, i was down shifting and coming to a stop when happened. After that tried starting tell battery had nothing, it just cranked and cracked. So the next day I started the search, started at the battery bought a new one sence i killed the other one, it started right up. so i put it back together went for a ride three blocks later it shuts off but still has power and can turn over but no start, so pushed it back home. Went in side for a bit, came back outside and it started right up no problem. I let it run at idle ran for about 5min then stut down agian. has gas flowing out of the petcock, so i know its not gas or air. when it died i checked for spark nothing, then after letting it sit for awhile it start up like a champ shut it off so i could check for spark and it was there spark!!! im down to cdi box(igniter) or pick-up coil. any thoughts out there?

I had the same problem with a similar bike. I tracked it down to the pick-up coil. See the following post for details...

also, once it quits you can measure the pick-up coil resistance to determine if it has failed.

I used a feeler gauge from Autozone or some other automotive parts store. The one I bought, for about $6 is .0015-.025 inch [0.038-0.635mm]. I had to stack two blades 0.381mm and 0.406mm to get 0.8mm.

Bought a feeler guage from sears. it had .032 on it which is o.8 for the gap need for the pick up coil. Pulled apart and back together with in the hour but had to wait 14 days from triumph. Needless to say it worked and runs like a champ. Thank you applejack
