Oil in my air filter box

I am working on a friends bike(01 Bonneville), he has not ridden the bike in about 4 months, has tried starting it many times but it wont start...until this weekend(right before bringing to my house) It started but idled/ran very rough and only with choke out.

Could this cranking, not starting then finally kicking over suck some oil up into the filter? I have not checked oil level yet but I will tomorrow.

I plan on removing the carbs, cleaning them/replacing jets, etc.

OR should I be looking for bigger problems?

Thanks, Roger

Probably just an accumulation of blow by oil from the crank case breather hose. Most all Bonnie's do it until the air box is chucked..

Could be anything from normal blow-by water and oil mist accumulating there and not drained regularly using the tube provided at the bottom of the box, to a worn breather seal. Couple of threads here:

being a 01 bike it could have a bad crankcase breather seal.

Mike, can you point me in the direction of the Breather Seal? Where is it located and how easy to replace, just in case this is it.

Thanks, Roger
