Exhausts loudness hiearchy
Hi
I am a newbie who just purchased a 2007 Bonneville T-100 (carb)
I have on the bonneville the TOR pipes. I thought that those pipe were stock because of the low sound of these....
I red the entire sticky post about the exhaust.
My question is:
From the quiet to the loud, please classify those:
EMGO Shortys
Dunstall Replicas
Norman Hyde Togas
Predator
Dominator
D&D pipes
Burgess/Brituro replicas
Staintunes
TOR pipes
1%................................................ .........................100%
Quiet Extra-loud
1% would be the stock one
thanks
Eric

Loudest is whatever my neighbor has on his Harley.

D+D's are louder than Dominator Touring, I don't know about the Dominator Sports.

If TORS are 15%, Staintunes are about 25%, but it's a tough comparison. The predominant pitch of each set of pipes and your sensitivity to it, is as important as how loud it is, sound pressures are measured at many hertz levels. Most will suggest you hear pipes in person...

From your list, I'd say D&Ds and Emgos are about the loudest, Preds and Doms are similar in both design and sound, Staintunes are a bit quieter, as are NH Togas, though they sound nothing alike, with TORs being the quietest. I've not heard Brituros or Dunstalls, so I can't comment.
There are a few systems I'm familiar with that you didn't list: Epco (Stainless Ride) is excellent, with a sound on a par with Staintunes. Arrow systems have a Jeckyl and Hyde option. With the silencers in, they're on a par with TORs, without them, they're almost as loud as the D&D full system. Old S'kool systems like universal shorties or Cocktail Shakers are very loud and can be made louder still by removing what little baffling there is.
I hope this is helps.

Here is a link to a bunch of different pipes, and their sounds. I think a few of them are the ones on your list. Hope that helps.

I have the Arrow pipes on my 99 SE. They sound great releasing the Twin sound without being illegal. They are fairly loud and can be made illegal within minutes.
Luckily they were on the bike when I bought it as at £950 plus remap, they are not cheap.
Made of Ali means no maintenace though.

Put on TORs last week. Didn't want loud pipes but was tired of having no sound character at all with the stocks. Removing the final baffle in the stocks gave a tiny taste of Bass sound at idle but didn't really change the stock pipes much. Last week I was about to post the same question as the original poster (but hadn't read the whole Exhaust sticky so was waiting till I did my homework ;-)
Was worried the TORs wouldn't make much difference from stock since everybody says they're so quiet. But to me they make a huge difference. Great Bass sound, just like in the link above, and neither too loud nor too quiet. Beautiful chrome too; just hope it lasts and doesn't pit or rust.
What made up my mind was finding a perfect pair New Old Stock at a tent sale for $75.
