Quick Release Sissy Bar

My oldest daughter (9) went on her first ride with me last week over Spring Break. We had an absolute blast. At the end of our ride we stopped for some coffee (and hot chocolate) at the Donut Whole. Lotta fun. We got her a full faced helmet with a shaded visor and are looking for a jacket.

She did great just holding the strap and pressing against me - but - I am really close to ordering the sissy bar / luggage rack from New Bonneville (M C Resources). I already have their grab rail and luggage racks. Great quality.

Even though it would only take "minutes" to switch from having the sissy bar to not having the sissy bar via wrench - I was wondering how I could make a "quick release" sissy bar for those impromptu rides where I want to take my daughter out for a quick ride. Ant ideas?

Or, are there any other sissy bars on the market I should consider. I think it goes without saying - that the Bonny looks much better without the sissy bar - but for a young passengers sense of security - especially a youth - a sissy bar is a great accessory.

I eventually want to have a sport touring bike in my stable as well. Either a Tiger - BMW r1200rt - or Yamaha FJR 1300 with a padded top case for my pillion. Until then its just us and the Bonny. But man, I am so looking forward to sharing some of the great rides I have found with my kids over the years. My wife has some nerve pain in one of her legs and can't ride with me. On the bright side - my daughter couldn't stop telling me how much she liked going for a ride. It was funny when she said, "Gosh - now I know why you like going on rides so much!"

I am so over winter.

I remember one of my silly ideas where I suggested using the two ends of the frame tubes that end behind the seat, to store odds and ends (and got laughed out of the thread...), Rodburner had made a rear carrier that sort of plugged into those tube ends after removing the rubber bungs.

Instead of a carrier, a sissy bar could be "plugged" in there and secured with some bolts through the tubes. If hand bolts like these were used you wouldn't even need tools to install and remove it.

Or clevis pins with "R" clips:

Here's the actual post from Rod:

You can just see those rubber-plugged tube ends at the side of the extended seat screws in this photo, they measure 20 mm ID, and have a usable depth of 700 mm each:

You're a lucky guy. My daughter (25 years old) refuses to ride with me at all.

Wow Forchetto. That is a very interesting idea. Thanks for the link to the thread. I went and checked out my bike. The tube in question is a little hidden by the seat - perhaps 1/4 or a 1/3 of it. Nothing that can't be overcome with a little thought. Maybe I can design and build my own. Very exciting.

There is an outfit that makes truly quick detach rear racks, hand holds, etc. Can't think of the name, but its "Chrome" something. Buy the base brace for under the seat and then you can pop on and off different gear.

I've been mulling over a quick release design after a thread in the Speedy/America Forum got me thinking about it. Don't have any hands on time with a bonnie yet so I can't throw in much more than half of my two cents, but one thing is I would definitely avoid the hand bolts idea just because you never know when something like that will loosen itself up. Then your passenger becomes the next youtube sensation:

I'd lean much more towards the clevis pins idea or forget about it and go with the wrenches. If you don't mind a luggage rack bolted on with the sissy bar quick release from that it might be an easier and more secure design.

Can't help you on the Quick Release Sissy Bar. That would be a great idea, I have Hepco-Becker side cases and a top case with a back rest. That gives a lot of comfort to my 10 year old Boy and 12 year old daughter.

For jackets, Tourmaster is the only company I could find that made jackets for kids (other than off-road styles).

Also, to give my kids something more comfortable to hold on to I ordered this belt with vertical handles. They love this thing!

I think it is great that you are riding with your daughter. Mine now wants me to take her to see Falling Water (I live in the DC area, so about 3-4 hour ride). My son is ready for Moto-Camping. Fantastic stuff that'll give them great memories. However, I get a lot of criticism and worried looks from people, and I know my in-laws freaked out when they heard their grandchildren were riding with me. Whatever . . . I'm just glad my wife is cool about it, she loves riding too!
