Cool 04 Speedmaster burning fuel and backfiring

Hi from the UK,

I'm back after a 6 month haitus without my Speedy.

Last time I was here, there was a whopping great hole punched through the casing of my engine and I went halves with the garage I bought it from to replace it with a brand new one - this seemed fine for a few weeks while I've been running it in. Back on the road

But... over the past few days it's been losing power sometimes when in low gears or when I'm carrying a pillion, and occasionally will backfire (usually after re-starting after a cut-out). It's a bit hairy when your going round a bend at slow speeds not sure if you're going to have the engine cut out on you

As-well as this I feel like I'm getting a lot less mileage out of the bike than I did previously. It's coming up to the time I've got to change my oil after running the engine in so I'm going to be doing that this saturday but am just looking for ideas on what to look for. I think maybe the fuel/air mix may be wrong or it hasn't been tuned properly.

Cheers for any help!

Check that your igniter unit under the seat is not being crushed by the seat pan.

We've had a few cases like that. If it tends to happen more with a pilion then it's a possibility.

Another one is a vacuum lock in the fuel tank due to a blocked tank breather.

Ah thats interesting...

We capped off a valve on the side of the engine that didn't appear to be attatched to anything when the bike came back... is the tank breather the little yellow pump under the seat? I know the tube did lead to that on the previous engine but I thought that was just for oiling the chain automatically?

The tank breather is that tiny metal tube you see when you take your gas cap off is it, on the bottom side of the tank a hose hooks up to it and runs down the back bone. Between the two carbs is a clip that holds the inline valve that's supposed to keep fuel in in a lay down. It's an easy check to see if the hose or valve isn't letting the tank breath, open the gas cap enough so you know air can get in and see if the problem goes away.

What is this "yellow pump" you're talking about? Same thing for the "valve on the side of the engine"...
