Custom Paint Costs?
I am thinking about having a tank and a fenders done to reflect the 1961-1962 paint style of the Bonneville. I've obtained quotes from two different shops and received drastically different prices. I'm curious if anyone has any experience in this area and can share the name of good shops and provide a ballpark price to expect.
This is a first for me, so I'm also open to any pointers or things to look for as I compare quotes.
Thanks!

Good paint is expensive in my experience, and for a bike I definitely want good paint. I had a custom bike shop paint the Parabellum Scout fairing to match my 2003 T-100. That cost $500, and that was 5 or 6 years ago, now (the cost of the paint was more than a third of the total price). Your tank and fenders are metal, so I see no reason why a good automotive painter can't do a very good job; however, I would insist on high quality paint.

If you have a shop do it (in lieu of the $12 option!) be certain to ask for references from the shop, and then check the references out. If the shop fails to, or doesn't want to, give you references then run - don't walk - out the door. It is, after all, your hard-earned cash you're gonna be spending, so references checked make for a more satisfied customer. Any reputable shop will gladly give you references.
Regards,
XLXRider
PS - we will, of course, require photos of your bike upon completion of the new gorgeous color scheme!

I take it that you intend to do a two-tone paint job with a gold (taped) dividing pinstripe?
It's quite time consuming plus it takes time to set the parts up in the booth so it's about a days labour and $200.00+ materials to do it properly. It would help the shop if you had an idea of the paint colour codes before you went in. They could show you chips but they are quite small and the effect doesn't always scale up.
I work in a collision shop so I have access to expert help at a good price, lucky me.
The two colours on the attached pic are both late model car colours so are easy to match if the worst happens.

get the two tone done somewhere, but don't let them tape off the pin stripe...a true pen stripe should be done by hand...check with local hotrod shops to find a pin striper to do that part...

You got it. I am leaning towards the sky blue/silver sheen comment at the moment. However, after seeing your Bonnie I may have to reconsider. How close of a match is your paint color to the flame top color?
PS - I found this schematic thanks to an old post somewhere on this site and will be giving this to the shop as a guide http://www.raskcycle.com/techtip/p1962.html

The actual colour is a match to the colour on the fender stripe, it's more orange than the pic but Mr Kodak can't figure it out. As for matching an actual Triumph colour, it's the colour that I remember and is similar to one I saw at Barber. Weither or not it would match if parked next to a '62 or not, I don't expect so, but it is what I want at the moment. I was tempted to go blue and silver, but I resisted.
Added a couple of pics taken inside the Barber museum, that place rocks.

As with most things, you get what you pay for. Want a Maaco paint job or a custom job? Or something in between?
Since they're motorcycle parts, there are a couple things that could save you a few bucks. This time of year, if things are slow for a shop, they may cut you a break just to get the work in, especially if you don't give them a specific deadline a week away. Likewise, a painter may want a little side work if things are slow at his shop. Pays to check around.
Also, get some personal references, particularly from other bikers that have had paintwork done. Now would be a good time to hit a couple of car or bike shows maybe and see what others have had done and the quality of the work.
