Footrest Alternative

I really dislike the stock footrests on Bonnevilles [not too keen on rearsets either].
So, since I traded my Thruxton foot controls for Bonneville ones [glad I did that], I put the passenger rests in place of the chunk-style Bonnevilles. I used a large nut [3/8" profile] to get them extended to about the where stocks are. Seems good. I am going to use some 3/8" aluminum stock and mate it to the outriggers so the footrest bracket is fully against the aluminum, lower the mounting hole about an inch, dimple the aluminum for the guide pins, a dab of black paint, and go.
A benefit is the detent when the footrest is lifted up and you are on the bike moving it around, as I was in the garage. No whacking of the shins.
I am not a peg scraper, so no concerns there. They look pretty cool too:

That looks good. I agree with you that the stock rests are a pain when footing the bike around and the rubber end grips your trousers.

As the stock ones on my SE are offset or kinked forwards, this also means that those rests are an inch or so further rearwards. Worth trying.

When I was using the stock foot rests, I simply removed the springs from them. This let me fold them up out of the way for manoeuvring
the bike around.

Of course! Take the springs out. It's so simple. But is there any downside? They must be there for a reason.

I can only think it's to return the rests to the horizontal when you scrape them on the ground during spirited cornering, but I would have thought gravity would do that if the pivot pins are free to move.

On the other hand you could find that you can knock them upwards when riding off and then find they're not there when you want to return your foot to the rests...with hilarious consequences!.

Now this is the sort of mod i want to do to my Thruxton.
Seeing as i snapped a front footrest off in the spill the otherweek, i was toying with the idea of some Oberon footrests, although if the bonneville brackets will replace the Thruxton ones, then that the way to go i think.
Nice one David, well done mate.

I have the entire Bonneville foot control set up on my Thruxton - outriggers, brake master cylinder, etc. Not sure if this will work with a standard Thruxton set up, but a little tinkering and who knows!
