Can you go back to stock?

... and if so, what would it take?

I usually hate this sort of pseudo-poll post, but I'm intrigued. I'm sitting here finishing breakfast (slept in really late today), preparing to sort my spare parts bins and make a plan for what I'm going to finish on the bike this weekend. I have three bins of spares, mostly original, that aren't going on the bike, that I've been holding onto "in case I decide to put it back to stock". The frame is cut, the engine is bored, and everything else on the bike has been either modified or replaced... she ain't going back to stock. I did the math, and prior to the engine work and frame-cutting, I was about $1200 (MSRP) from getting the bike back street legal*. Now, it's got to be five digits, and that ship has long-since sailed.

On the flipside, since I put the nice tank away in a box before the last rework, it's still nice, and it'll look good on the bike's next incarnation, so today's job is to figure out what of the spares I have I want to keep and what I need to get rid of.

What about you? Are you holding a box of spares? Keeping the stock silencers, just in case? Do you have most of another bike's worth of parts stashed away? Do you just not care at all?

Inquiring minds want to know.

*[Edit for clarity: By "street legal", I mean 50 state legal with turn signals, all the emissions crap, stock silencers, an accurate odometer (mine doesn't seem to accumulate mileage since it's not on the bike), etc. It was mostly street legal where I ride it (missing a plate light, but otherwise it's good) because the states I ride it in have next to no laws regarding motorcycle equipment.]

I try to only do mods that are reversible and have boxes of brand new bits salted away in case...I know I'm never going to do it, but I also know that if I sold or gave away any, I would need them the next day.

Yup, I pretty much keep everything
[SAIS parts tossed]. Gave away 3 stock mirrors, sold some stock lights, traded some foot controls. But I've got two stock handle bars [one black], three chainguards and seat straps, stock Bonnie speedo and bracket, Thrux gauge bracket, T100 gauge bracket, idiot lights, silencers, passenger pegs up the wazoo.
Hey, you never know, eh???

hold onto that stuff!

I've got a box of spares. Some things are "just in case" I need to go back to stock (tires, shocks, seat, etc...) but I'm not planning on selling my bike (ever) and I don't want to use that sub-standard gear if I don't have to.

It does come in handy to have an emergency spare on hand though. i.e. - When it was time to have the Ohlins serviced, I rode down to the service place, swapped out my shocks for the stockers and rode back home. I was able to ride for the 2 or 3 days that I waited for the shocks. If I didn't have the original stock shocks, I would have had to ship the Ohlins and my bike would have been out of commission for the week it would have taken to ship back & forth & get the service.

PS, if anyone has any stock Scrambler front pegs, mine are getting really worn and I'd be willing to pay or trade for a set in better condition.

Stock Parts...

I've got all mine.

I've also got boxes of parts off old bikes which I used to own, but sold.

It's crazy.

One of these days, i'll dump the whole lot on eBay.

I've kept most of the stock stuff because if I decide to sell the bike, I'll sell some of the more expensive add-ons separately, and as mentioned, sometimes it's handy to have spares.

I've sold off or given away a few odds and ends because people needed them. For example, I'm never going to put the gauge and idiot light bulbs back, they're free to anyone who needs one, and I sold the gauge bracket because a member needed it.
