D-tool - make one?

I don't want to buy a d-tool to make a simple adjustment to my carbs, has anyone made one? Can anyone suggest how? I was thinking some round aluminium rod and filing away one 1/2 of the end? What diameter?

Legend has it that a .22 rimfire shell casing will work as a socket.

Much ado IMO when you can get one of these for just a few bucks shipped: http://www.bellacorse.com/bce011-14.htm#bct001

Tried the 22 cal. casing, kinda wobbley. Made one from a bit of air nozzle tube [and duct tape for grippiness] and was better. Bought one and works great - much more exact.
Air nozzle tool an the real McCoy:

He's in New Zealand, so he might not want to wait on it in the mail.

If you can find a piece of metal tube that just fits over the end of the screw, dent one side and you're set. Otherwise, if you really don't want to wait on a tool in the mail, you can use a piece of hose to grab the end of the screw, remove it from the carb, and slit it with a small file or saw so that you can adjust it with a flat head screwdriver. Not the most durable modification you can make, but if the plan is to adjust them a time or two and then leave them, so long as you don't leave too much material, it'll be fine.

It's not at all difficult to make one if you access to some basic metalworking machinery.
Having read mixed reports on the durability of the commercial items which appear to be stamped from soft aluminium I elected to make my own from a bit of 10mm mild steel.

Small hole up the centre, machine away third of that diameter, silver solder in a bit scrap steel to form the flat, machine the outside diameter to size to fit the recess where the pilot screw sits, Knurl the other end to get a grip and put a nice finish on to look good and Bobs your uncle.

Of course it helps if you have a lathe and a miling machine and some welding/brazing gear.
It's also my other hobby outside of motorbikes.
