Differences in engine cooling

forgive the Noobness..

i tried to do a search on this topic but i am still a bit confused on the differences of Air, Oil, and water cooled engines
(how they work and advantages vs disadvantages etc..)

also curious.. i thought the 2007 T100's were oil cooled but the owners manual says its they are air cooled
?

if anyone can help set me straight i would be greatfull

thanks in advance for your time!

Don't quote me on this but I "think" most motorcycle engines are air cooled. The majority of the cooling function comes from air moving across the engine fins. Now, you can add (or the bike comes with one) an Oil cooler... this will cool the oil after it leaves the engine removing more heat.

Water cooled engines are just like a car in that they will have a radiator that circulates water through the engine to remove heat.

THats what i was figuring.. so i guess Air cooled also means the Air cools the Oil radiator on the front of the bike (that in part cools the oil )

That and the fins on the cylinder head and barrells. Also, there is natural air cooling of the engine side covers, though that's not as efficient as the oil cooler.

I know the question has been answered already, but if you are looking for a more long-winded explanation, howstuffworks.com has some good stuff for how to better understand how the cooling system in a car (same as a water-cooled bike) works... They also discuss the difference between air cooled and water cooled.

haha prop,
i just noticed your Link Wray tag ! haha

so, is the T100 considered Air Cooled like it states in the manual? (even though it has a oil cooler)

Yes it is an air cooled motor.

our bikes are both air and oil cooled .There air cooled like most air pluss the front of the jugs/head have oil pumped through them that help cool them .The oil cooler then cools the oil.

Our bikes are primarily air cooled; that is the main cooling process is air acting directly on the surface of the engine. The surface area of the head and barrels is enlarged by the finning. Supplementary but significant cooling is provided by the oil cooler as the oil passes through its core. The modern BMW flat twins, for instance, are referred to as oil cooled because the significance of the oil and air cooling is reversed. That engine has only rudimentary finning and the oil is actively used to cool the engine, as well as lubricate it, by being sprayed onto the underside of the pistons. Water cooled engines have internal passages cast into the head and block that allow water to carry heat away to the radiator.
