Talking Hello Fellow Triumph Owners

I joined your excellent forum yesterday, even I have been reading it over the past months, after having purchased my 2008 Bonneville (bought new in 2009) in July 2009. Had the AI removed, K&N filter and TOR peashooters. Love the bike.

I hope this is enough for intros. Got a quick question: my handbook says RON 95 for my bonneville but when I downloaded the manual from the official Triumph website, it says on page 32 to use gasoline with 87 Octane rating or higher. I am a little confused as my bonnville is the last carburated year (Canadian model) and RON 95 is 91 Octane at the pump. So why is Triumph now recommended 87 Octane for their 2009/2010 models even though the are FI?? Any input out there?

I think Triumph is or was being very conservative. Both of the Triumphs (1200 trophy and Thruxton) I've owed recommended 95 RON and both run with no problems on 91 RON. Only one time I heard a pinging from the trophy was an up hill start in 3rd gear (doh). In fact the Thruxton seems to get slightly better fuel economy from 91.

Just get the highest octane pump gas you can find. What's it going to cost?Another 50 cents to fill the tank?Your bike will thank you.

All else being equal,a EFI engine can get away with a lower octane fuel because of more precise fuel metering, and better atomization.
