Reluctant to go into 1st gear

I have noticed that sometimes, my 09 Bonneville does not want to go into 1st gear from neutral. I have to juggle the clutch and throttle whilst pushing on the gear lever. It has only happened a handful of times, twice today.

Anyone else experienced this?

The bike has 900 miles on it. Is this a typical symptom of a tight engine that gets better with more miles?

Start simple, get clutch adjustment checked.

Slinky, I occasionlly find the 1st gear a bit tight getting into and find that if you roll the back back or forward a foot she will go into the gear easier. You may have already picked up on that.

Shift into 2nd instead. Back down to neutral. Let out the clutch, pull in the clutch, shift into first.

Just got to get the gears lined up...

Like above, rocking will do it also (sometimes), this is doing the same thing, lining up the gears.

Sometimes it can be the Idle speed too high that causes a reluctance to go into 1st while stationary.

+1 to what LuckyBonnie said. Usually a few inches back or forth works for me. Soon as you feel resitance on the clutch pedal, not going into first, start rolling a bit and it will drop right in place.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Cable adjustment is good, as is the idle speed.

I can understand having to line up the gear dogs, but this is a first for me- never experienced it on any other bike.

it always seems to happen when I'm at the head of a line of traffic at a red light

Having said that, I had no problems at all on my way in to work this morning so it is hopefully a rare occurence.

Had 4 new Triumph's and all have been that way and all get fine with a few miles on 'em.

That's good to know, I was hoping it would improve with a few more miles.
