What Tools/Spares Do You Carry.

I am making a list of things I should carry in my backpack, without going overboard.

Any ideas?

Someone has kindly given his short list already in another thread.

Had anyone got the sizes of the Allen wrenches used in the America?

Thanks

Lets see..., I think they are too big, too small, and I left it at home.

These bikes are stoutly built, and very reliable, but CruzTools makes a nice metric or SAE set for motorcycles that is compact and has good stuff:

http://www.cruztools.com/toolkits%202007.html

(Check out the vendors on ebay for CruzTools... much better pricing)

Me? I have insurance with roadside assistance & flatbed towing... I just ride with a cell phone for a major failure, wreck or a flat if far from home or service.

Now, my old Harley... that's a different story. In my jacket pockets I always carry a 4-1 screwdriver, crescent wrench, and a Leatherman multi-tool.

It always has stuff vibrating loose or needing adjustment even on a short ride. Had a rear turn signal almost fall off the other day, but I tightened it road-side.

Cheers,
BLIGHT

I always Carry extra bungee cords, tire gauge, first aid kit, chain and lock. Its a shame the Triumph didn't come with a small dedicated tool kit like the Suzuki. (size of a wallet)

I carry an allen key to undo the seat bolts, a small light, a small multi tool and a mobile phone. My Corbin seat doesn't allow room to carry a full tool kit underneath, otherwise if I had the room then I would make up a kit or go with a Cruz tool kit.

None. The chances of having the right spares and tools to be able to do a particular roadside repair are virtually zero, so why weigh yourself down with stuff you'll probably never need anyway? Membership of a breakdown service, a mobile (cell) phone and a credit card are more likely to be of use.

Swiss Army penknife, multitool thing, adjustable wrench, cable ties, small allen key tool thing, mobile phone and AA phone number. You can fix small things with this lot, but if it's anything big then you'll need recovery anyway.

When I went down a couple years ago, the throttle got very tight. So I rode the remaining 50 miles home "on cruise control"

When I came home, I found that it was the endcap that jammed slightly against the throttle grip - and that I had the right allen wrenches in my pocket to rectify it.

So I always carry 3-4-5-6mm allen wrenches, those allow me to adjust the handlebars/controls if I should feel the need.
(And the leatherman wave tool, some zip ties and electrician's tape. )

I vary what I carry depending on what the trip is. On a routine basis I still carry quite a lot of stuff - all fairly small tools, that will allow for most standard adjustments. I also carry a stripped down mini compressor and bottle of slime for emergency puncture repair, as a get me out of trouble measure. I do ride around some fairly out of the way places, so the ability to get back to town is reassuring. Included in my little tool kit is a multimeter, and spare spark plugs. Simple stuff like electrical tape and wire ties are good saviours too, as well as small vice grips and such. They all fit in my little ARK tool kit.

Even so, I always carry the cell phone and AAA RV PLUS membership. If you're going to use AAA make sure you have the RV plus 'cos they won't touch motorcycles otherwise. In fact you're probably better off with one of the other breakdown services.

Anyhoo, on long tours I also add tyre irons and spare inner tubes to the mix, as well as spare clutch and throttle cables. They all pack small, so no big deal. Oh yeah, I carry a home made screw jack so that I can get the front wheel off the ground. I have a centerstand so I can do that easily.

It's all rather over the top, and if all I did was little local rides I wouldn't bother with it all. So far have never needed it, and hopefully never will.
