Fuel Petcock Issue..
The wife and i returned from a beautiful fall ride yesterday and as we pulled into the garage i reached down to turn the gas off and to my surprise it was already in the off position.
This may help explain why we have ridden as far as 214 miles on one tank without ever hitting reserve. First time i have ever heard of such an issue with a petcock. It is likely covered under our warranty but the closest dealer we would take it to is 3 1/2 hours away so may just buy one and replace it myself at some point.
Has anyone else seen this on these newer Triumphs?

First I have to ask the dumb question. You know that "on is down", "off is forward" and "reserve is up"?
Now that you are thinking " of course I know that dumb-*ss". Have you pulled the fuel line and stuck a length of hose on the petcock and into a jar. Turn the petcock off to see if fuel flow stops (it may dribble but not full flow). Then check the other 2 positions to make sure they are working correctly.
If your still sure there is a problem see the dealer. I had 2 replaced because they would get stuck and couldn't turn it. Those things aren't cheap so it may be worth a trip. If you have a good dealer they may order you a new one with a phone call then one ride to replace it.
Oh yeah, what year is your bike and how many miles? Your profile doesn't tell us anything.

There are no dumb questions only dumb people lol (i heard that somewhere). It was in the up position, i need to get a look at it again, but your post makes sense, thank you.
214 miles without hitting reserve still seems a bit much.

You did not hit reserve because you were already on reserve with the lever up.

214 miles two up?! thats incredible - I hit reserve at 95 miles - admittingly that's not highway miles but fanging around curves and I do have FCR39 carbs on my Thrux but nonetheless I'm jealous....214 miles ...!

We run with the petcock down always, except yesterday when i (thought) i had forgot to turn the gas on. Passed 200 miles many times in the "on" position and have never used reserve. Only had 100 miles on the tank yesterday.
Good gas mileage i guess..

That makes for a lot of fill-ups, 214 was the furthest we had gone before we found a station and that is with the petcock on the down position "on". We always start looking for gas at 200 miles, almost never ride on any highways just back country roads, mountains and here in town always two up. The bike averages 54 miles per gallon but it still seems like a long way to reserve.
