19 Tooth Front Sprocket Chain Issue

Hi all,

I know the 19 tooth topic has been covered here ad nauseum, but I didn't see my particular issue covered here.

Of all the threads I read regarding the benefit of swapping out the front sprocket to a 19T was that it was an easy like 20 minute job. Not so for me.

I was under the impression that I could get away with the swap without having to do any chain slackening, obviously I was mistaken.

Anyway, reading my Haynes manual says I need to "slaken" the axel bolts then adjust the chain adjust screws. Well I have three issues:

1. Which way do those axle bolts loosen to come off? They must have been put on by a gorilla because I can not seam to break them loose and I am not exactly sure I am trying to loosen them in the right direction! Can't find it covered either in Haynes or in my owners manual. Feel kinda stupid here but I'm afraid of stripping or worse breaking a bolt off!

2. Once I have the axle bolts loosened, then I need to adjust the chain tensioner screws inward, on BOTH sides EQUALLY in order to slacken the chain right, or am I missing something?

3. Also, on my 07 Thrux the right side axle nut is larger, maybe 21 mm than the left side nut which is definitely 19 mm, is this normal or did the owner before me possibly change out the right side for some reason? Now I need to get a 20 0r 21 or 22 mm socket. Anyone know for sure why the nut sizes would be different?

To make matters worse, I'm not totally convinced I'm going to like the 19 tooth but I bought it from Brent from New Bonneville and figure I have to at least give it a go. Thought this process was supposed to be easy..I spent the whole afternoon trying to get this done to now avail!

Any help, insight and clarity would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all!

Rob

Unfortunately I can not help you with your problems but I would be very interested in the replies you get. I have Triumph Sprint and I will be looking to go down from my (stock) 19T to your (I am assuming) stock 18T..... Do you still have your stock 18T front sprocket?

I do still have it yes, I'll be holding on to it until I can determine whether I like the 19T or not...that is if I can ever get it installed!

The axle is 19mm,the nut is 24mm.They loosen like normal, clockwise to tighten, counterclockwise to loosen. Loosen the nut a good bit, loosen the adjusters all the way and push the wheel forward, install the chain and re-adjust the chain, tighten the axle.. Remember, don`t loosen the chain until you have broken the 36mm nut loose on the CS sprocket. You need the chain on to use the brake to loosen the big nut.

Thanks Burner! Just a couple more questions:

Am I loosening both axle nuts or only the 24mm right side one? Again, I have a 19mm nut on the left side..not sure if that is stock or not.

My Haynes manual only shows a pic of the right side 24mm bolt being loosened, is it possible I only need to loosen that bolt in order to move the wheel up?

Thanks again Burner...sorry for all the dumb questions!

Rob,the 19mm is part of the axle.Just hold it still and loosen the 24mm.

Yes, another member just pointed out that embarrassing fact to me also.

Thanks again Burner, very much appreciated!

I heard/read/imagined they made each side of the axle need a different sized socket so you wouldn't have to buy another socket, provided you already had a socket set.

That makes perfect sense now that you point it out. Sadly my Sears 140 piece set only goes to 20mm!!

My old SL100 just had a chrome knob on one end with a hole in it,that you stuck a screwdriver into and then loosened the nut on the other end. I`m sure the axles on our bikes are set up so that the proper torque values can be applied.
