'09 SE: engine stalled with 1 gallon in tank

I had filled the tank, rated at 4 US gallons, reset the tripmeter, and gone for a ride.

At the 140 mile mark, I was riding downhill and braking moderately hard from 50 to 30, when the engine abruptly stalled, giving the sensation that the tank had completely emptied. I shifted to neutral and stopped. I turned the key "off", then "on" (just for luck). The engine started instantly, and the MIL/"check engine" light went out upon starting,as usual. It ran just fine for a level mile to the next gas station, where I filled the tank with 3 gallons.

The bike ran normally back to my garage, where I consulted the factory shop manual. Sure enough, the fuel pump's intake point is at the tank's very back and just above the tank's "floor". The intake has its own filter (in addition to the main filter) and a "baffle".

Accordingly, it appears that the downhill inclination and the use of the brakes had shifted the last gallon forward, out of reach of the intake. The "baffle" had not acted to briefly retain enough gas to avoid stalling-if that is indeed the baffle's intended function. Upon stopping, the gas had surged back to the intake, the momentarily dry pump had re-primed itself, and all was well again.

I related this matter to my dealer's mechanic, who commented that "you only get the use of 3 gallons of the tank's capacity" and that no other customers of EFI Bonnies had mentioned this problem.

Has anyone else's EFI Bonnie behaved in this manner?

The farthest I have gone between fuelings was 146 miles, and the tank took 3.38 gallons. Most of the roads around here are fairly flat though. One of these days I'm going to intentionally run the bike out of fuel, maybe with the wife following me with a gas can, just to see how far I can go. Where did you find your factory shop manual??? I'v been searching everywhere with no luck. Thanks

Russ

Sorry, I got so excited about the shop manual that I forgot to answer your main question. I have never had the bike cut out on an incline or decline, but I have noticed that the low fuel light will toggle on and off. Your circumstances must have been just right to cause the stall, hopefully not the norm.

for Bonneville, Scrambler, Thruxton. This manual applies to BOTH the carburated and fuel injected Bonnevilles, Thruxtons and Scramblers.

Tank capacity

You found out what the rest of already know: The theoretical capacity of the tank has only a loose relationship to the available amount of fuel.

Factory manual from the dealer. Or mail order from PJ's, Baxter, Hermy's, MADSS, etc.
