regulator rectifier help

Hey Guys,
My 04 Thruxton went in for its 50,000 km service and my Triumph dealership just told me the regulator/rectifier is going. A new one is just over $300.

Does anyone know of an aftermarket unit or of a unit that will work off some other bike?
Thanks Shawn

Here's a thread from the S3 forum about replacing the stock rectifier with a much better unit from a different bike. Supposedly it heats up less, so you can put it under your seat to hide it.

I did it to my Scrambler: Rectifier Upgrade. The rectifier was $50 off eBay.

Can you explain what your dealer meant by 'going' ?

Can you describe the symptom please?

My experience is these either work or are 'gone!' There is no 'going', they don't go 'soft' or anything of a nature that is only 'partially' functioning, or capable of putting out less volts than it should.
If output charging voltage is 'low' this is more typically indicative of a stator which has one burned phase. Or a shorted diode or SCR in the rectifier stage - both of these could only be considered already bad.
The other failure mode would be high output volts - not regulating - bad R/R in that instance, would also consider that 'gone'.

Before you commit any money to replacement parts, perhaps you would like to run through the diagnostics in the above referenced thread.

Having said that, the MOSFET R/R is an excellent upgrade regardless - just to be sure that you don't end up still chasing a bad stator, so an accurate diagnosis of your problem would be good.

Thanks everyone,
I'll ask a few more questions when I pick the bike up today. But I still think I'm going ahead with the upgrade you've shown me.
Thanks again for all the help and I'll be sure to post a couple pix of what I do.

That is definitely a good plan, but be sure to check the stator.
You can't hurt the regulator (old or new) if stator is bad, although the opposite is possible (i.e. bad Rectifier/Regulator can damage stator).

Not invaid, but only if the output voltage was high, which is rare occurance with these type of regulators, which typically fail in the rectifier stage.

Ok, the shop tested my stator and tried two different R/Rs on the bike. The stator is fine and they said my R/R has been over heating. Evidence of this is in the harness connection, they have gone very brittle, and the shop said the connection was bad too.

Regardless, want to do this upgrade. I got an R/R off a 08 CBR1000. This was one of the units on the list one from the threads for the upgrade. My concern now is the number on the R/R I picked up off the 08 CBR1000 is not FH012AA. It is - FH014AA. I looked on the Shindengen site for specs on the unit but didn't find anything.
Is this unit going to work for me?

Step aside - Newbie coming through!

Silly question, but does the rectifier do? Sounds slightly obscene.
