steering head lock

I recently bought a 2007 Bonnie that was a repo, so I didn't the key for the steering lock. I bought a new lock cylinder from the dealer along with a new rivet. Has anyone had experience changing this lock? I figure I can grind the head off the old rivet holding the swinging cover, but how to get the rest of the rivet out? The new rivet has a kind of stamped split to it so that when you drive it in, the bottom will spread and lock into a relief at the bottom of the rivet hole. Any ideas are welcome

fork lock

Theyr's not much written down about how to disassemble those locks, there is a printout of it at Bike Bandit:
iconhttp://www.bikebandit.com/triumph-mo...-2007/o/m17653
and I'll attempt to download that picture for you here:
so you can see what the whole thing looks like.
there were no specific instructions anywhere I could find so keep looking for someone who has been there to give you the best hints for getting it out.
You may be able to get a key by tracing back the serial numbers of your bike.
If not the easiest solution looks to be like drilling out the rivet with the correct size drill bit, cleaning or blowing out the shavings and reinstalling your new lock.

Had to do it on my scrambler ....

Long story short ... I had to do it on my Scrambler when I first took posession of the bike as the dealer had lost my key (igntion, too) and I got so tired of their lies and mistakes I replaced both myself.

You need to completely remove the rivet holding the cover on first. You can do this with a pair of good pliers. It pulls right out.

Since I did not have the original key to remove the lock with I just used a hardened 1/4 inch drill bit and drilled straight through the center of the key hole until I go past the pins. The lock assembly comes right out after that.

Something I noticed with the lock assembly and probably the main two problems folks have with the steering head locks. One is there was no lubrication at all in the steering lock hole and it was already rusted up a bit as new. Second was the threaded guide pin was not locktighted in place and very loose. If it backs out even a little the lock will be difficult to operate or even jam. I Loctited the screw in place after making sure it fit done the lock hole without binding, then I put a good coating of moly lube on the eniter assembly. Have never had a problem with it since then and I use it all the time. ALthough the arrow is obscured a bit it is pointing to the screw that causes all the problems.

I did not use the rivet that came with my new lock assembly. Instead I tapped the rivet hole and used a small torx security screw in its place.

Lock

Due yourself a favor & return the lock!! Get a disc lock or better! These fork locks become a problem sometime & can cause real trouble!. Dealer when I bought mine new said "Dont use it!" Heard some horror stories about people getting stuck somewhere after breaking the key or whatever. Your choice? I DONT use mine no will I ever try!!

These older 70s type steering locks if I remember rightly can be removed by using a punch, [or even mole grips] or similar behind the rivet [which is hammered in] once you get it to come out a bit, it can be withdrawn quite easily. I dont think filing the head off the rivet is a good idea, unless you can drill the rivet out?. Try method A first, if not sucessful go for method B

I forget to add, a flat screwdriver under the lock cover [tap with a hammer] is the best way to lever the rivet out.

I use mine all the time..just keep the lock lubricated and you'll be fine.

This is the exact same lock assembly that was used by BMW from the 1950's through the 1980's. Keep it well lubricated and you won't have any problems.

If you need to remove the rivet, as mentioned above, get a slot head screwdriver tip under the cover and lever it out that way.
