I could be wrong..... BUT, by mounting the piston and heavier component at the top unsprung weight is reduced. Less unspring weight = better suspension performance.

Mounting the shocks upside-down

The hydraulic dampeners on most shocks are designed to work well only when right-side-up, employing gravity in the operational flow of oil. If mounted upside down, they tend to become very stiff and unyeilding, which could be a plus on a track bike, but a real PITA (literally) on the street.

No Red. Ikon tend to put the progressive windings of their springs at the bottom rather than the top. The physics of it is beyond me.

What you are looking at is the prototype of the Ikon shocks for the 09 alloy-wheeled range. I rode down to the Ikon factory and spent a day there talking and testing as they manufactured a variety of shocks for me and eventually settling on these. The work was necessary because the 09s have shorter shocks than the 08s.

The Ikon director, Geoff Lowe, was most helpful.
