Ian, I have had a Bonnie in the past and now a Scrambler and both bikes have always been good starters and fire right up, I jetted both when purchased for my altitude, pipes, etc.

Maybe a jetting check for your bike is in order.

Ianscram,
No offense, but that is a pretty crypic message if you're really seeking advice. What does it do when you try to start it? Does it turn over? does it sputter and die? Does it not start cold or when its hot? Any modifications from stock? I don't get the "no pattern" part.

My Dad, a master mechanic, always told me that an engine is like a fire. You need three things for combustion: Fuel (gasoline), oxygen, and heat (spark). That's where you should start your analysis. Which one of those aren't you getting or getting consistantly.

The fact that it starts at all rules out a lot of serious issues. If it spins over w/o starting and then starts OK later, that sounds like an electrical problem. Something's not making a connection. If it coughs and dies that might indicate a gas or air issue.

Check to see if you have all four of the black caps on the manifold and front of carb.

I don't want to sound condescending, but look for the obvious stuff. I've had a red face many times for not checking simple things. Are plug wires secure on plugs? Are you using the choke properly (only when engine is cold)? Do you move the kickstand up and down for any reason while starting? Gas turned on? Are you sure the kill switch is in the non-X position? Is the front wheel in any certain direction when it doesn't start (many wires and connections in the headlight that may be being pulled)

As I've said, more info would help. Good luck
Rich

no pattern

Working on the no pattern question I have coverd all the normal bases plug, fuel, air and battery. With no luck so my reason for no patern is blackbox trouble is it common or not fortunatly a mate came to the rescue last night with an ECU reader and guess what the eletrically gremlins have done there job. First a poorly made ECU box and an engine that vibrates and rain water equals a none starting problem with no pattern.

Bad news Ian, are you still under warranty? Seems like the electrics on these are hit or miss, coils, ignition sensor and cpu are way too common problems.

Donno, but doesn't the chaos theory suggest that no pattern is a pattern? Anyhow, glad you gettin the Scrambler fixed up.
