Big Twin love it or hate it
I hope it makes tons of cash for Triumph.
The good thing about a line-up of different models is that you can choose the bike you like.
We chose bonnies for a reason.
But why the disappointment with this new bike (I'm even having trouble calling it a Thunderbird 'cos the name don't fit!)
However, when was the last time Triumph brought out an engine and didn't put it to good use across a number of model lines?
The 955i especially - Tiger, Sprint, RS, Speed Triple and Daytona
865 - bonnie, thruxton, Speedy, America and Scrambler.
I would bet $1000 thai dollars (heh heh) that this new 1600 engine will be on all kinds of bikes in the future. But they put it on this bike to break into a new market, a very large - an lardy - market maybe, but a rich market.
I wonder if they downplayed the Triumph styling clues to get into a market where they have no brand loyalty, and work on the branding from there?
Finally, look at the motor. From what I understand it's over 100hp, torquey, 6 speed close ratio tranny and belt driven. That motor is going to be very useful on lots of different bikes.
And as a fat bugga I'll get the new cruiser for me and the (thin) wifey!

The Rocket 3.
Although I am sure that you are correct in that we will see this mill in various chassis configurations just as we have seen with the Bonnie/Thrux/Scrambler and the various Triples.

I'm not willing to bet against you there Buddy... not in any currency. In fact, I'm very hopeful that Triumph will design several new models powered by their new 1600cc monster, parallel twin engine. I really hope they come out with one for the non-cruiser guys like us to get all warm and fuzzy about.

+ a gajillion
Yeh - right on. That big parallel twin needs and MUST go in a Bonnie type chassis.
My advice to anyone who thinks likewise is to write a nice letter to the factory, praising their new lineup and stating in no uncertain terms how when they release a speed twin, you'll be buying one.
In the meantime, when that new cruiser hits the showroom floor, I'm going down there with my measuring gubbins and I'm going to jolly well figure out how to fit it in there myself.

I hope Triumph makes money, too, but I'm afraid that the market sector in question is huge and the new Triumph will be pretty much unnoticed except by the loyal Triumph owners. A day late and a dollar short, so to speak.

They should have come out with a 330-lb. 500cc parallel twin (think, modern version of the T100R Daytona).
That "Thunderbird" is a pig. It's a knock-off of a knock-off and will only sell because it says "Triumph" on the tank.
If there's one positive thing I can say, it's that at least with this attempt at co-opting an old name to boost sales, they have the correct number of cylinders.

I agree. If they make a model that LOOKS like a Bonnie, I would like that better than a cruiser clone. I would really like to see spec on the HP/Torque. If that fat mill isn't pumping at least 120hp/65torque why bother.

big twin
yep its a non-descript fugly bit of a bike.
But look at the rest of the target market, so could and probably will make a shed load of money, so hopefully Triumph can go design something i would part money for.
Porsche did it with the cayenne tractor...............

Yes - I would buy one of those. And / or a 500 single.
