DMV - Friendly Silencers?

Probably a silly question - I agree with the consensus the OEM silencers on our bikes are too mild... I am interested if any aftermarket silencers (that help the tone) are still DMV friendly?

Don't know of anything between the stock and Tor's. I don't think that you would have any problems from the DMV with whatever pipes you choose, somehow straight pipe Harley's have no problem.

Iceseven,

An old issue but I see you live in Estes Park. Since last year, Denver requires an EPA compliance sticker on your pipes. Cops can pull you over if your bike "sounds loud" or they can check for the sticker while writing you up for something else. You face a fine between $500 and $1000. They set a limit of 82db. Pretty god**** low.

I didn't know that and see why you were asking. There are a couple of other Denver riders here and maybe they have come across this.

I live outside Estes Park and when we hang out in town there are always Harley riders that come down Main St. and I guess they think everyone wants to hear them blip their throttle while almost crashing into the stopped car ahead of them, so probably not long before that law makes it in Estes.

They shouldn't require stickers, which would mean as much as a DOT sticker on a skid lid. If they want to crack down, they should set a specific noise limit at a specific distance at a specific rpm or speed. That way we at least know what to aim for.

I have the TOR's and like them. They give some nice tone and less restriction than stock and still look OE. I've heard Predators (loud), Bubs (louder) and D&D (loudest) and did not care for them. If you're worried about noise, just ride out with a couple of HD's sometime and nobody will notice you.

Thanks for the info on the TOR's. I like to look too. Can't get any hard info on them except a warning "not legal for on street use". I think us Denverites are stuck with stock until the law gets overturned.

The irony is Denver Police Harley's violate the ordinance.

What state are you in?

I'm in the pseudo strict Massachusetts. Very strict laws are in place here but cops don't have the means to quantify or enforce them. They passed my TORs, but I needed to bolt my reflectors and DOT approved blinkers on. I was careful not to grab any throttle while pulling into the inspection bay.

I've noticed bikes with stickers that don't have things like mirrors, blinkers, speedometers, even brakes, so I'm sure with a little due diligence you can get anything to pass.
