throttle off = stall ... help?

Hi,
I have a 2006 Bonnie Black. The last couple times I have ridden it something weird is going on. I'll be cruising along at about 55-60 mph in 5th gear nice and steadily. If I release the throttle to slow down or even back off a little, the bike will sputter. One time it sputtered so bad that it stalled. Anyone know what is going on?
Thanks in advance,
DP

An easy first check, from reading here, is to loosen your gas cap to check for air lock. Could have pinched tube. Wayne

Please try a little different description or tell me what sputter means.

Your jetting looks pretty good to me except your main jets look very small for a Narked 790--but that is not any part of your problem at that speed.

Make sure your vacuum nipple plugs are all still in place (2 on manifolds and 2 on carbs). Some have had trouble when they removed the CA emissions stuff because they plugged the carb vent hose that went to the canister. This will cause carb flooding big time. The carb float bowls have to have a vent to the atmosphere. You might want to check and see if your carb vent hose is pinched a little to cause some carb problems.

I had this happen not too long ago. 30 miles into a ride... sputter stall start repeat... all the way to the dealer. A mouse and babies had moved into the airbox. Removed the mouse house and I was good to go.

Thanks for the replies. By sputter I mean that when I roll off the throttle the engine stops firing for about a second or so and then restarts. One time, however, I let off the throttle all the way and pulled the clutch in and the engine stalled completely and had to be restarted. This was in 5th gear at about 59 mph. Switching to 4th gear at the same speed (higher engine RPM's) seems to help the problem a little but it will still sputter even in 4th gear

I checked and all 4 nipple plugs are in place and not cracked. The carb vent hose is open to air and there is no kink in the hose. Its been over a year since I did all of the mods and it has been functioning just fine since then.

This seems unlikely but it sounds like your carb sliders are not closing. Check to make sure the cables are working freely, e.g. It is a push/pull arrangement. This enables you to force the butterfly closed.

If this is OK, there still could be a problem with vacuum and the sliders. If, for some reason, they are slow to close or are hanging up, it would surely cause the engine to stumble or cut out. Might need to do an exploratory on your carbs. Check the sliders, diaphrams, springs or for something loose or out of position. I don't think the sliders are binding due to wear because it is a new bike.

Does it happen if you rev the engine in neutral while sitting still? Since your airbox has been removed, can you see into the carb intake while operating the throttle? Use a small mirror if you can't. Look for proper response for the sliders. Check both. It could be one carb and not the other causing the trouble.
