The guy who invented wool underwear should get the Nobel price
In a recent thread it was discussed how mesh jackets are great. And they sure are.
But, I would hereby like to make the point that wool underwear is also great. This week I had a couple of days off, and thus time enough to make the trip from Oslo to Stavanger and back. This trip is either along the coast and boring, or over the mountains and totally awesome. However, even in Summer the trip across the mountains can be cold.
So it was on with the trusty old long woolen underwear to keep me warm. Without which, the trip would have been insane. All the other riders that I met had great big riding gear on, and I wouldn't be surprised if one or two had switched on their grip-heaters.

Doesn't that stuff itch the family jewels beyond reason? I had a wool sweater that drove me round the twist - I couldn't bear wearing the thing, though it was certainly warm.
Mind you, my Dad echos your view on the stuff - so what's the secret? Is there a certain quality / style or something?

Merino wool...
IceBreaker brand from NZ. Pricey here in the US, but worth every penny! Most comfortable shirts and long johns I've ever worn and I spend most every day outside. Merino t-shirts in summer are excellent as well!

A sheep invented wool underwear and unlike humans sheep seek no prizes or recognition for their valuable contributions.

As far as I know (and I am by no means an expert) it comes down to quality, type, spinning and how accustomed you are. OhioT100 mentiones Merino, which is certainly a good type (and the one that I use). Generally the producers use much better wool for underwear than for sweaters and such.
Funny story about wool sweaters: Old superstition has it that if a maiden knits in one of her own hairs into a sweater for her boyfriend, then they will get married and stay happily married, unless the hair comes out. A friend of mine received a sweater from his then girlfriend. He noticed a hair sticking out of it, and promptly pulled it out. Feigning innocense he just said "What is this hair doing here?" while his girlfriend looked on in shock. He is now married to a different woman.

+1 for the Icebreaker clothing. yes, it's pricey but well worth it, doesnt stink like synthetic undergarments, and doesnt itch at all. i have an Icebreaker shirt that is amazing under my jacket, and it's the same here in colorado. nice and toasty in town, but chilly up in the mountains and over the passes.
