Added new item to my pre-ride check list
Went out for a ride on my T100 today. Stopped off for a cuppa and notice oil spilled on top of the RH crankcase. Looked for oil leak above this then spotted the oil filler cap had come unscrewed. Although it was only half way out it allowed oil to spray out a bit. luckily I had only gone about 10 miles before I stopped and spotted it. Tightened it up with a coin and checked the level when it had settled, still in range on the gauge so rode home and topped it up. The last time the filler cap had been undone was by the dealer at the last service - something else I will have to check before every ride

Most likely, you only need to check after it comes from the dealer or any other mechanic.

Don't spend too much time checking things out. After all the point is to have fun and ride.

I'm not sure how the Bonnie would react if the cap actually came off with the engine running, but I can speak to this issue with the W650 Kawasaki I owned for several years. I got distracted in the middle of an oil change by a neighbor (my fault, not his) who wanted us to drop by and sample his home made wine. I'd already changed the oil and filter, and as always, I fire up a bike and ck for any leaks,
Big leak this time! Oil cap not replaced. I first heard a sound like that of a huge compressor, then a geyser of oil shot all the way to the overhead garage door .... I mean at least a quart of oil, and this was at idle!
The same incident would have been a disaster had the cap come undone with a crankcase of hot motor oil blowing straight into my leg.
I cleaned for at least an hour, getting all the oil off the bike, the floor, garage door, and ceiling.
It is certainly something to add to your list of items to check.
Bob

I check mine every time I change my oil,...about once a season. I have never had my oil filler cap loosen up. Probably was never tightened up when last serviced. I wouldn't loose any sleep over it.
Cleaning up an oily mess has a high PITA factor. I had a similar problem, except with the other hole. Had a WIX filter not seal properly. After adding new Mobil 1, I noticed a little drop on the side of the filter. Gave it another crank tighter. Maybe 3/4 in an inch. Started it up. Oil squirting everywhere. Sure comes out fast under pressure.
Spent an hour with rags and washing with TSP to clean it up.

I've really met only a few people in my life who (a) I would let touch one of my machines with a very high degree of confidence on my part and (b) even fewer who I never felt I had to go back and double-check things on. Kind of a sad commentary really. Or, maybe it's just me...

Nope, It's not just you. I believe there is a plan in place to lower the exceptable level of service from all service industries. Business owners and especially large corporations now give pay increases below the increase in the cost of living, and drop the service level to its customers. Cheaper wages, less service,...get it both ways.
It's a bloody miracle someone hasn't been injured or killed yet. Or maybe they have........
If I have any work done by a shop, I always double check and get a list of work done.

Shop Work
It really sucks if you PAY to have work done & have to re- check all they did!! Had a bad experience on delivery & will let NOONE touch the old girl now!! The only thing I will do is have a well trusted racing buddy (w/ a shop) change my tires! If you do it yourself & something screws up- the only one to blame is YOURSELF!! If you do it - its free & you know what was done & not!!

Hi Deany,
I'm not talking about a major check you would do if say you were going touring, just a basic safety check.
Overall visual check for anything amiss, loose or missing (do this regularly and you get to know what is normal). This is probably the most important item in this list.
Run a spanner or screwdriver round spokes to check for loose ones.
Tyre pressures (surprising how much they drop in a week or so)
Oil level (now oil filler cap after recent experience!)
Lights (compulsary to have them on here in the UK)
I'm sure other people check other things but I bought the bike to ride and enjoy it!
I used to think that checking the bike before each ride was a PIA until I went flying with my Son In Law and saw the pre-flight checks he had to do on his light aircraft!!
