[quote=Ringadingdoo;1029963]Mmm thought this was a Scrambler topic...

Actually the topic was Scrambler's roots, & Steve McQueen figures large, in both the original's & the tribute's success.
Why else would Triumph put his old racing number (278) on those silly numberplate thingies?

Lets also not forget the BSA and its proud heritage....

Anybody like to form a Company and we'll ressurect the once world leading marque?

No doubt the copyright is owned by a Chinese Company already?

How about a Norton P11

1967 Norton P11 Street Scrambler
Norton Atlas 750 engine
Matchless G-85 CS frame
Speed 102 mph

Goes to show we Brits built the best bikes in the world bar none, all thanks to the weekend habits of our American cousins.

Absolutely 100% right.

At least Triumph is alive and well.

Pity about the rest.

The rights are owned by a number of different companies, Casper (there's another thread on this subject somewhere), but rights for making BSA bikes are still owned by BSA Regal in Southampton, probably not much more than an hour's ride from where you live. Until very recently the company was still making a "Gold Star", but sadly with an imported engine (Suzuki I think), rather than its own. I don't think it was a seller, so as far as I know production has stopped.

As for the Scram, like Ringadingdoo says, the book 40 Summers Ago can probably tell you everything you need to know about what the Scrambler's designers were trying to pay homage to, as well as the McQueen connection. It's the story of Bud Ekins' attempt to track down the original bike decades after the ISDT event in which he and Mac participated. Unfortunately, the book must have had a very short print run, because it's only available second-hand. It rarely if ever appears on Amazon UK, but it does surface on Amazon US from time to time, usually at quite a premium. There's one available now for 49.95 USD, but often US sellers won't ship to Europe. I think it is written in English and Japanese (Ringadingdoo can probably put me right on that). I have seen a copy, and it was the first time that I even discovered what colour Mac's bike was - until then I'd only ever seen B/W photos.

When I was growing up in Nthn England in the '60's, I used to watch scramble racing on a track near our house. They were mainly the smaller capacity machines, like BSA Bantams & Triumph Cubs, along with Greeves & Matchless G80's. But they looked like shrunken versions of the Scrambler. & I think it was those memories that triggered such an emotional connection for me with the Scram, from the moment I first saw a photo of one. Rather than anything to do with Steve McQueen & US desert racing, or The Great Escape.

Yes, I can see that being a great influence. Somehow those youthful memories just stay with you. For me, it was just seeing Bonnies and Trophies on the streets. I grew up in Southampton, on the south coast of England, and I remember seeing long lines of them parked up outside the local pub on Sunday lunchtimes on the edge of a big park called Southampton Common, and then hearing them roaring away when the pub closed. That's why they're still the epitome of cool for me even as I get close to ringing up the big 50.

It's a very nice book and as Odysseus said it's written in English and Japanese [with some funny typo's...Eddie Milder...who?] Contents wise its has some of the best pictures available of what could be described as the New Scramblers father, with some great close up shot of some of the details that made those ISDT bike unique.

When I first saw the scrambler Steve McQueen didn't cross my mind, but being a BIG fan of the TR6SC I just loved the look. To be honest I don't think the modern Scrambler is a very accurate homage to Mac's 64 bike, noticeable the exhausts and colour scheme. It has more of a resemblance to the SoCal Desert sleds of the late Fifties and early Sixties.

And if anybody has any images of desert racing from that period I would love to see them Triumph or not.
