I have a friend who carries a pocketful of 1/4 inch steel ball bearings which can be flipped innocuously over the shoulder & they tend to get the message...

I would say Ace that your friend is as bad if not worse than the tailgater.

It surprises me that you guys have so many problems with rage where you chase people, given the high rate of handgun ownership and use over there.

Cheers
PfM,

We don't want our good cousins over there in Oz to get the wrong impression. Road Rage is extremely rare here in the US, and I don't know the percentage of gun ownership - maybe someone else can provide that - but I would take an educated guess that it is a very small % of the total population as well. Most are used for sport - hunting and such.

I travel overseas very often, and yes to Australia as well, and I get the distinct impression that many countries think of the USA as a bunch of gun toting crazies running around. We are not, believe me. The guys on this post are just having some fun with us, and yankin' your (and our) chain.

As bad, but not worse. Some really deserve it, but you do risk escalating the violence with a retaliatory approach.

I tend to get away if I can or let them passed. We are very vulnerable if we can't get away.

on my way in Hartofrd yesterday i saw a young lady(she wont' get old) in her Toyota following a semi at no more than 6 feet @ 70mph and she was on her cell phone
nothing short of a lobotomy would help her
a water pistol filled with brake fluid works well, it wil smear on the windshield and take the paint off the car in a few hours

My dad is a truck driver and on the back of his trailer he has a bumper sticker that reads " If you dont stop tailgating, I'll flick a booger on your windshield"
Probably not effective, still funny though. Im not sure which one it was but the one James Bond movie with Sean Connery, he had a bike with rocket launchers mounted on it pointed backwards! That would fix a tailgater and thier cage real quick.
This is the right approach, get out of their way, with a bike you have many evasive options, you've got the speed, the room to break away, I never have that problem with a bike. If I'm already on the max speed limit on the open road in a policed area I just move out of the way and let them go.

With a car I just ignore them if I'm behind traffic or pull over if the road is clear. I'm happy with guys breaking the speed limit in front of me, they set off all the traps !

Yup...that's me. Let 'em by, let THEM collect the tickets. For me, the "weave" trick works for non-idiots (breaks the "highway stare" lockup) and for the 'ragers, a quick "zip and over" works...let them by, and let the cops deal with them. As for the brake lights, I'm installing a set of the "flashing" brake lights into the tail light housing (activated for front brake application only) ....that should be interesting when I'm finished. Hopefully it will catch the attention of the general public without having to resort to arms, etc. On back roads, I'd rather have to explain excess speed to a cop than having to have an EMS squad pick me up out of a ditch because some idiot cager was in full road rage mode (and most cops are a LOT more interested in getting 'ragers off the road than a biker going a bit faster than the limit....tho YMMV). Your throttle is your best friend in that case.

Some very fine advice here - I urge calm and patience wherever possible - It's tough when you are in the right and some a1hole is trying to run you off the road - but I really feel that it's best to try not to let the "red mist" drop down in your vision and go berserk - as riders we usually come off worse.

That said, I have done my share of yelling, screaming, door denting and finger giving.

But I try not to.

A wakeup moment

I used to think it was a small percentage too until one rainy day in the 70s at a small airport in PA. My mechanic friend, AL, had a habit of carrying a loaded 45 in his back pocket. My 3 year old son was with me so I asked AL to put his firearm away. He gave me some crap and told me how naïve I was about guns. He asked me to guess how many of the other guys in the room had a gun on them. There were about 12 men. I knew most of them, lawyers, doctors, contractors, etc… I said I thought none were carrying. AL laughed and bet me $5 that at least half had a gun on them at that moment.

I took the bet. AL got everyone’s attention, explained our bet, and asked those carrying to show me their weapon.

A second later I was $5 poorer but much, much wiser.

I try to never provoke other drivers.
