Salvage Title Bonnie Black

Would you guys ever consider purchasing a bike with a salvage title?
2006 BB
9000 miles
Couple dents in tank right hand side near fuel fill about the size of a quarter.
Broken r front turn signal (lucas repro)
aftermarket pipes, bars
no damage to engine cases/pipes/front fender

The guy says it was a repo and the owner vandalised it before they towed it.
He says he has ridden it 200+ miles and has no mechanical probs.
I'm a cynic, but whats a decent price for something like this?
I know caveat emptor and all that. Whats your opinion?

If the owner vandalised his own bike then I would question how he treated the bike from the start, probably not very well. A tank alone is around $800 so unless you could get it very very cheap I wouldn't take a chance.

I looked up low retail on nada and it was $3655 and maybe because of it's history you could offer him much less.

I'd look at what's intact and bid him something in the range of what you know ou can sell the pieces for. I have an 06 BB with less miles and a ton of upgrades and the dealer offered me $5k on trade (total ripoff IMHO)

I wouldn't pay more than half that for a salvage title...$2500 tops unless it's got some ridiculous mods...like mikuni 42's or something...

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your perspective), modifications and upgrades have absolutely no effect on used motorcycle (or car) pricing. In most cases an absolutely stock bike is worth more than one that has been modified. Most of us like to tinker with our bikes. You have no idea when you buy a used bike if the previous owner was a decent mechanic or an absolute hack. I would rather start with a stock bike than one that had been "improved."

Well, you are what you eat too. I'm wondering why this is a "salvage" title as opposed to just being a "repo". I now that most repo vehicles have been rode hard and put away wet, but there's gems out there. If it's rideable and there's a tank to be bought, I'd grind a little and get the thing if it's cheap enough. After all the talk about the motors being bullet-proof it wouldn't be too much of a risk. And...there's always the 904 kit.

I also recently purchased a 2006 Scrambler with a previously salvaged title and 1100 miles. It had tank dents/chips, busted tailight, busted headlight, no mirrors, no badges, broken shifter peg and broken front brake controls.

I paid $3550 for it, approx. $1000 in parts and she's almost ready to go. I'll repaint next winter I think. Still cheaper than many used 883 Sportsters on the market.

I did find after I brought it home that the frame under seat was bent (fat chick perhaps) . A padded pry bar and a little help got her pretty straight without heat.

So if you're sure the frame is straight, she's cheap, and you like to do a little fixin', I'd go for it.
