Upcoming Moto Adventure – Tailbag Recommendations Anyone?

I'm leaving on May 22nd for a 1000+ mile journey around Lake Michigan. I'll be on my Bonneville and my good friend on his Concours. This will be my first long-distance motorcycle excursion ever, and I'm really looking forward to it.

The bike is just about ready. I'm currently fashioning some forward pegs for her, and they should be complete in a week or so. (I'm calling them Convertipegs, I think they're gonna work out great, I'll post pics and details of these when they are finished) Oil change is recent and the rubber is newish (Pirelli Sport Demons). I'm pretty much set with everything except bags. I bought Saddleman (leatherlike sorta) saddlebags and I have a tankbag, but I'm gonna need a tailbag of some sort.

I've looked at this:

Cortech Tail Bag $80.00
Price is right, but might be a little bit on the small side.

and this:

MotoFizz Camping Seat Bags (Medium) $147.00
More than I want to spend, but the size looks good.

I'd appreciate all recommendations for other bags that may suit my purposes. Keep in mind I have the stock seat with no grab rail. Thanks.

I have the CoreTech and thats all I used on a 2600 mile trip. Good product. I guess it depends on how much you are taking. Are you camping ?

Go to NewEnough.com and poke around through their tailbag assortment. On each bag be sure to "view larger images" which will give you a number of detail shots of the bag (including the mounting system).

http://www.newenoughhp.com/luggage/tail_bags/

I have the Rapid Transit Platoon Tailbag (which they show on page two). I like it, and it has one of the most adaptable mounting systems I've seen. It works well on my scooter, it works well on my Bonneville. It is expandable, and holds a surprising amount of stuff. It does not come with a rain cover. I just line it with a plastic garbage bag - works fine.

My second choice would have been the Tourmaster Deluxe Tailbag. Tourmaster makes Cortech, and this bag is quite similar to the Cortech bag (but about $20 less expensive).

NewEnough is not the absolute cheapest place to buy on the web. They do have excellent Customer Service and a liberal exchange/return policy (worth a few bucks to me). I've used them a number of times. If you still have questions after viewing all the information they provide on their website, just call them. A friendly, and usually quite knowledgeable, person will be right with you. I highly recommend them.

Thanks for the replys.

No, we're not camping. I would have been willing, but my riding buddy nixed the idea and I didn't argue the point. We're leaving in less than three weeks and it will probably be plenty cool in the UP still, so it's probably just as well.

On second thought, the Cortech should be plenty big enough. I'll check newenough and see what else is there.

Gotta go finish those pegs now.

How about getting a Renntec rack, and just strapping on a waterproof bag on top of it? IMO more versatile, eg. if you want to carry a tent/sleeping mat later on.

Check out www.revpack.com
They are a family business that makes all of their own stuff. Great folks and a great product at really good prices.

CAPTDON,
I have a new Aerostich catalog floating around the house as well. I'll have to dig that out and have a look.

ivar,
I'm not really interested in a rack for the bike. Almost all of my riding is performed in solo mode, so there is plenty of seat real estate available to strap bags to.

smartin,
Thanks for the link to the Rev Pack site. I will certainly consider purchasing one of their bags.

Hmmmmm…

Tour Pack and Jr. Tour Pack $95.00 and $75.00.

Seat Pack and Jr. Seat Pack, $110.00 and $90.00

The shape of the Tour Packs would probably work well with my under-seat mounted saddlebags. That Jr. Tour Pack might be just the ticket.
