Rambling...

Skipped the $300 dealer 6K service - did the oil change (MUTOL synthetic) and chain adjustment / cleaning with a buddy. No issues so far.

I took the snorkel off, no adverse effects.

Recently started smelling gas fumes, isn't effecting performance or gas mileage.

The tank paint is slowly but surely flaking away - not sure if I care.

The rear shocks blow - I hate them. My buddy has convinced me I can do the swap myself - so I will.

Starting a collection of tools and spending more time with my buddy who races / wrenches so I can absorb whatever I can.

Rust is setting in, minor but annoying - will handle ASAP.

Overall I'm at 6,700 miles since September '07 - overall very pleased with my bike. B+

Good for you really. It's good to get into wrenching. I love working on bikes. Although for some reason I hate working on cars.

Whatever, anyway, enjoy.

Check various bolts to make sure they're tight.

The rear shocks are as simple to change as they look. Do one at a time.

My dad's been an ASE certified master mechanic for over 40 years and can fix pretty much anything with a Clymer or Haynes. I just ordered the Haynes for the Bonnie/Thuxton/Scrambler pretty cheap at www.themotorbookstore.com so I can finally start to learn more about my baby and start handling the basics. I just clocked 15,000 miles since Feb '07 and look forward to my commute every single day.

I also have an '88 Suzuki Savage as a backup bike and the motor is on it's last legs so I picked up a '95 with low miles that had been crashed for only $300 and will be swapping out the engine and transmission into the '88. I am looking forward to getting grease under my fingernails and bonding with pops as he guides me through it and I'll have a whole parts bike to spare. Just about the only thing I can do mechanically right now is change the oil on the Savage but it gives me such a sense of satisfaction that I cannot wait to tackle the engine swap on the Savage. I'm a New Englander living in Florida so I don't have or want a car cuz it's never too cold to ride but I want to get the swap done before the rainy season hits cuz I'd much rather ride a backup bike in the rain and not risk dumping my baby.

Wash it (as often as you want) with a good car wash like the classic car folks use (I recommend Griot's http://www.griotsgarage.com/product/...rrivals&page=1
) and you won't have to worry about rust anymore. I ride all winter through saline covered NE Ohio roads and don't have a spec of rust.

Wow! Dude, that is great! Oh, by the way we will be back in Cocoa in about a month - we had a great time! We ended up renting a beach house and met A LOT of really great people. Didn't sleep much but it was great.

Unfortunately we didn't ride down, I'm pretty thankful we didn't - but we are going to trailer the bikes down for our next set of shows. We are playing Dog N' Bone. Coconuts and the Sandbar - I think.

You should totally come party with us - I love the weather down there! Looking forward to getting back down!

Just when I think I've got it all figured out I listen to his solo bit on The Lemon song and I realize I know nothing...
