How long before modding new bike
When I bought my bonnie she was a year old with 900 miles and already wearing gaitors, renntec rack and 68 tank cover. I rode her without further ado for two months before adding 60mm mirror extensions so I could see behind me without weaving and a further two months before adding a scottoiler because I just don't trust myself to do it right otherwise.
Excluding those of you who've owned one or more of the same bike before and consequently already knew what you wanted - how long did it take for you to carry out your first mod, what was it and why?

We always have trouble distinguishing between mods & accessories in these discussions. So I'm assuming that by mods, you mean anything that improves performance. Right?
In that case my first mod was when I upgraded the tyres on my Scram from Trailwings to Anakee's (currently on Tourance's), & I did that when I'd worn out two rear & one front Trailwings (around 10000klms).
I next put in Ikon shocks & fork springs (12000klms) a Thunderbike stage 1 performance kit (15000klms), a 904 kit, Sth Bay head, Keihin 39mm FCR carbs, nark kit, & h/d clutch (37000klms) & it's in the workshop now getting Excell Rims fitted (42000klms)
Why'd I do it?
'Coz I could.
Would I do it again?
You betcha!!

First mod on first bike was within a month of ownership and that was a fabric cover for the single rear shock on a Ducati Multistrada... I've found that with every bike I've had (excluding the Triumph T100 I inherited from dad) I've done Shocks and Springs first... only exclude Dad's Triumph because that was the first thing he did.

Picked up my 05 scrambler on the 14th of Feb, it had been fitted with a single seat, flyscreen, light guard, centre stand, sump guard and a chrome chain guard.
2 weeks Later I had changed the single seat back to the dual seat, removed the chain guard and fly screen altogether, replaced the sump guard with a Norman Hyde item [which is a little more subtle and a lot more retro] By the end of March I had changed the rear light to a Lucus item, and fitted mini indicators
This months will be a Norman Hyde Exhaust, next month I might go for a airbox eliminator kit

Oh, if we're talking accessories as well.
My bike came with a solo-seat, TORS, & a head light guard, & I immediately added a bash-plate, handlebar brace (& cover), engine-dresser bars & a centre-stand (since removed). Over the following months I added a Shu-Roo (ultrasonic kangaroo scarer), an RJ's topbox, & a National Cycles screen. I've also put the mirrors off my Street Triple on the Scram (bar-ends on the Street) & replaced the headlight bulb with a xennon.
Mods to come are a complete brake upgrade (I'd like Berringers, but will probably settle on EBC) & a BRM exhaust. I'd also like a long range tank, but I doubt that I'll ever get one.
PS. I forgot about my steering dampner, which went on with the 904 mods

Mod squad
The moment I got my 2008 (11/07) Bonnie home, with just 27km on the clock, I removed the AI system. Three weeks later, the moment I got it home after the first service, I fitted Emgo tear-drop mufflers, UNI foam filter, 125 main jets, one shim on each needle and wound out the mixture screws 1/4 of a turn each. Bloody beautiful!!! Cosmetics: Union Jack brake fluid cover plate, Iron cross valve caps, Short-stem bullet signal indicator lights and Ace Cafe 70th Anniversary stickers on the side covers.

I had a K&N waiting to be put in the second I got her home. I also removed all the reflectors that are stuck everywhere on the bike. Shortly after that I moved the clipon bars to above the triple clamp for a more comfortable riding position. TORs went on a few months later, I did the bafflectomy and it just wasnt enough. I rode her like that for a while and now that im single, i've got more time to work on her. Within the last few months I redid the carbs (140 mains, 1 shim under each needle and 2 3/4 turns on the screws. I also fitted my own air box removal system. In the works are to do something with the rear fender and a fly screen.

I had the AI removal and BUB exhaust on the day I bought it. K&N filter a week later and the head light a few days after that. In less than a year I had bobbed the rear fender and installed a sparto tail light, and modified my stock turn signals and built a new exhaust from scratch. Oddly, I think I have washed the thing twice in the same amount of time.
If you're not riding it you should be customizing it.

I added some bolt-ons (tachometer, center stand, fly screen) at the beginning, but I preferred to ride it a while, get used to it, and do other mods gradually as I perceived the "need" arise. This is how I get my enjoyment from modding, but it's not for everyone. For me, it's an evolutionary process.
Three years later, I think that I'm mostly finished with what I now believe it "needs", but that can change. I'm now beginning to think in terms of removing things.

the first thing I did was to change the handlebars just a couple of weeks after buying it. Then a couple of months later came the British-Customs combo package w/ predators/airbox elim. It kinda snowballed from there.
