Price of Gasoline

There are 2080 hours in a work year. If you earn $50,000 a year then 50,000/2080= $24.03 per hour.
In 1975, gasoline was selling for about $1.00 per gallon. I drove a 1967 Pontiac Bonneville that I bought from my Father. It was a 389 cubic inch V-8 with a 4 barrel carb and got about 8 miles per gallon in the city.

I drove the same distance to work then as I did today, round trip is 13 miles.
5 days of work= 65 miles @ 8 Miles per gallon uses 8.125 gallons of gas or $8.13 for gasoline for a week.
In 1975 I began working at Miller Brewing Company @ $11,800 a year or 11,800/2080= $5.67 per hour.
$8.13/5.67= 1.43 times my hourly wage, to drive to work for one week.
Last night I purchased $20.00 worth of gasoline@$3.39 per gallon, and my Mini-Van has a computer that tells me how many miles until I am empty or distance to empty (DTE). It is not precise but pretty accurate, for sake of illustration. When I started my engine my DTE was 146 miles (for $20.00 worth of gasoline). 146 miles/13 miles(round trip)= 11.23 round trips.
$20.00/11.23= $1.78 per day. (2008) 1.78/$24.03= 7% of my hourly pay in 2008.
$8.13/5= $1.63 per day (1975) 1.63/$5.67= 28% of my hourly pay in 1975.
28% - 7%= 21% more in 1975 than in 2008! Three times more!!
So, when gasoline reaches $10.17 per gallon (3 x $3.39) I will be paying equivalent to what I was paying in 1975! (roughly- give or take a buck or two but gas is still a deal. Someone posted that it cost $14.00 in the U.K.?)

Let me look at this.....

Your weekly salary in 1975 would have been ($5.67*40 hours) $226.80., and you were spending $8.13 per week in gas. To get the percentage of your weekly salary vs gas numbers, you need to divide $8.13 by $226.80 (not vice versa). That equals 3.5% of weekly salary for weekly gas.

Your weekly salary in 2008 is ($24.03*40 hours) $961.20., and according to your numbers, you minivan gets 24.75 mpg (is that right?). $20 divided by $3.39 (per gallon) equals 5.899 gallons of gas. 146 (miles) divided by 5.899 (gallons) equals 24.749 mpg. Your 65 mile trip divided by 24.749 miles per gallon equals 2.626 gallons (used per week), multiplied by $3.39 per gallon equals $8.902 in gas per week. $8.902 divided by $961.20 equals 0.9% of your weekly salary for weekly gas in a vehicle that is 3 times as fuel effecient.

An easier way to put it would be:
$3.39 (per gallon) divided by $24.03 (an hour) equals 14.1% of hourly salary.
1.00 (per gallon) divided by $5.67 (an hour) equals 17.6% of hourly salary.

Your particular salary has gone up 323%, and gas has gone up 239%.....and we have it easy in the US.

Feels like I'm at work....

We think fuel is high here, but it's nothing like the rest of the world. It's $3.49 per gallon in Sioux City, IA. I don't like paying it, but I think we have to be reasonable and realize that's the way it is. I was talking to a guy last summer from Canada and his first comment was he couldn't believe how cheap fuel was here.

What are prices for gas in the rest of the world?

Kem

Gas to fill up my cars is not the only thing that goes up with the price of gas. How about $5.00 /gallon milk, or everything else that has gone up since the price of fuel has gone up. My only consolation is I'm giving the oil company b#$tards near worthless US dollars for their gas! I'm investing in heavy metal, like lead!

Yeh it would be nice

if we all made almost $25.00/hr. But We don't. A lot of us are working for under $ 8.00/hr. Some are working multiple jobs. The gas prices are rediculous. I agree that the high prices will motivate us to reduce our consumption but it also is creating a much lower quality of life style for the less fortunate. The well-off can run all of their kids from soccer practice to music lessons and what not and still be able to afford going to the movies and to sporting events to provide relaxation and fun for the family. Many families can not afford to go on long distance vacations. Little weekend trips are their only way to have any sort of vacation and now that has become to expensive. Yeh if you are making a good wage this is not effecting you that much but it is hurting the families that do not._98OLVV:

Between US$8 and US$9 per US gal in the UK. In Venezuela, high test is around a quarter a gallon. Yup, 25 cents/gal. Low test (used to be 83 octane) is around a dime but it is going up soon....maybe to 12 cents or so. Lemme see.... cheap gas but got to put up with Chavez? No thanks. I was there for the 1989 riots.....

£1.10 per litre in the uk from today (search google for a coversion!) so quit moaning! If everyone got around on motorcycles it would be significantly cheaper, but some people just feel too naked without their pickup trucks/SUV's

Wink

One advantage of the increased fuel prices: "Drive by" shootings are way down! I've heard that more gang members are just text-messaging insults to one another.
