Harley's

I had to title this thread as such to see if sweatmachine's blood pressure rises....LOL....and I at least know he'll read it!!

But I thought the following was funny.....

I dropped my Sportster off at the dealership on Saturday to have the rocker box gaskets replaced due to a leak and I stopped by today to see if they had started. Well, unbeknownst to me, the Service Dept. is closed on Sundays and Mondays so I just looked around for a bit.

A salesman came to me with the usual lines and then told me he had a Nightster and asked if I would show him my Sportster (was in the back) which I was more than happy to oblige him. Needless to say he was impressed and said, "Oh, you really ride this thing!"

HE then went on to ask ME at what speed he should be at when shifting into 5th and how to change the oil!!

I understand that we were all at that stage at one point but I would think he'd know these few basic things if he's going to be promoting and selling these bikes...

Oh well. I thought it was funny (odd).........

Hopefully the tech that will be working on my bike will have more of a clue!!

they're open Mondays? Salesmen rarely have a clue anyway. Of course, he may have been baiting you.

My local dealership was recently sold to a new guy and ever since, the new owner changed the hours of operation and are now open 7 days per week so I just assumed the Service Dept was too. It's nice being able to get parts, etc any day of the week but this will be the first time my bike ever gets serviced and I'm not totally sold on the new crew so we'll see......

On the issue of technicians

I worry about bike dealers techs fullstop - I don't care which manufacturer we are talking about. After my bonnie went in for the 500 mile service, I found the oil cap slot was gouged up. It makes you wonder how competent these dealer techs are if they can't even open the oil fill cap without bollocksing it up.

Seems to me that the car manufacturers have really pushed the service side of things at their dealers, and this has yet to occur at motorcycle shops. I do not feel nearly as comfortable getting my bike serviced as I do my car.

So I don't. Do it all myself.

I totally agree with you!

But in regards to things like your oil cap gouged up, before they even took my bike in, they looked the bike over thoroughly writing up what damage already existed and there was only two things - one of which I pointed out because she had missed it - and I then had to sign off on a paper stating that the damage (a scratch and a miniscule ding) was already there. So I'm not worried about that part.

Just want it repaired correctly the first time....and we'll soon see how they did.

That's good - I like that kind of attention to detail - chances are they are a pretty good dealer then. It means they are paying attention to standards - sure there's a certain anount of arse covering going on to, but the pre service / repair check is still a good sign.

I think Harley went to 7 days a week being open a few years back. Now if only the Triumph dealer here would do the same.

I really cant stand when I know more about the bikes then the salesman do, I understand I am an enthusiast, maybe they aren't, but its their job to be informed about the products they are selling.

When my best friend was doing the paperwork on his new Sportster, a salesman came to me and said, "it's obvious ya'll are Sportster fans. Would you like to see the baddest Sportster around?"

Of course I did!!

He brought me over to a bike and said, "So what do you think?"

Me: That's not a Sportster
Salesman: Sure it is
Me: No it's not
Salesman: It just has every option available and doesn't look like like your typical Sportster.

Another salesman says: What's going on?
Original salesman: I'm just showing the customer this Sportster.
Salesman #2: Customer's right. That's not a Sportster. It's a Dyna.
