Bike rack on a Bonneville
Here is my first prototype of my bike rack. It is very similar to the one I had on my Ninja 20 years ago. So far the basics seem to work pretty good. I still need to work out the outrigger tie downs. In the pic it is just held on with bungee cords. It needs to be connected towards the end of the outriggers. Finished design should be done by next week as I need to use it for a out of town ride.
I don't know how the thumbs down icon got on the title but it is a definate thumbs up!

That can NOT be safe... there are times you really just need to use the cage.

Man, you are going to cause a million accidents as cagers look over their shoulder to see what they thought they saw, but couldn't believe.

An advisor I once studied under always said "I you are stupid you must suffer". I think in this case that will apply in the first good cross wind.

Cant be any worse than carrying the screen door on my sidecar rig.
I dont believe that there is ever a time that you NEED to use a cage, if you are inventive enough.

You know, not to encourage you, but I would suggest heading over to advrider.com. There's a guy there who made a bike rack for his BMW GS and apparently it worked great. In any case, I bet it works better than what you've mocked up. No offense.

Madness!
What happens in an accident?
Those handlebars look well placed to do some serious spinal damage.
It'd never be allowed in this country, & shouldn't be allowed in yours (IMO)

I like the ingenuity!!!
but Old Scratcher is right. Maybe the rack could support the bicycle, and may not directly cause an accident, but if you did have an unrelated accident, you'd likely be impaled by your Trek. Go for it if you want, but the risk vs reward equation doesn't balance in my mind.
Why don't you just take off the Trek front and rear wheels, and carry the bicycle components on /in your sidecar?

reminds me of something the comedian Chris Rock said:
" Sh*t, you could drive a car with your feet if you want to....
that don't make it a good fu*kin' idea !"
