Dyno runs & Oil filters

Well, just got off the phone with my Motorhead Brother and he always has interesting bits of information, not necessarily Earth Shaking news, but it's usually valuable. So here's the latest tidbits he gave me.

Dyno runs can be performed three ways. Speed, time, and rpm. The most common is RPM, but it's not necessarily the most accurate. My Brother asked his shop to do a run on an 08 Twinkie (HD twincam) using time and the HD actually got to peak HP faster (4.5sec vs 7sec) in it's stock configuration vs it's hopped up version, even though the hopped up had more HP. I guess the moral of the story is if you can't get useable power to the rear wheel it's wasted.

The other tidbit is that OIL Filters have two ways you can measure their filtering properties. The oldest way is Micron Ratings that measure the size of stuff that can pass thru the filter. The newer (better?) way is SAE Multi-pass rating that measures "crud" in the oil before vs "crud" in the oil after and a rating from the mid 90s and up is the best. Since there's only 5 or so companies here in the states that make filters and if you're in the know you can actually identify the companies by how they are constructed. If you need to know what a filter's Multi-pass rating is, you might have to go to the web to find out.

Don't know if you guys are interested in this, but I found it very interesting.:

what rpm was his peak hp at stock and what rpm with mods? The other thing to look at is did it make as much or more with mods at the max hp /rpm it did stock .If so he has more useable hp.The troque is what you need to look at at lower rpms thats what you feel anyway.HP you see you dont feel .When your tach goes over just as fast at high rpm as it dose at the lower rpms you have made hp.When you crack the throttle and the front wheel lifts you have made ft/lbs.
