So, you all probably wonder what a 904'd, mikuni carb'd, etc etc etc bonnie runs like. Here's a little anecdote for ya.
A good friend has an '06 sv650, it's fuel-injected, makes about 70-75hp (it is stock) and weighs 80-100lbs less than the stock bonnie (I also weigh a good 50lbs more than my friend). It has a lot higher redline than the bonnie, around 12-14k if I remember correctly, and the power delivery is very different. It's relatively weak on the bottom end but really gets on the cam after about 7k.
Stock bike vs stock bike, the sv wins hands down. It is a quick bike, compared to the bonnie anyway. Everytime I've added some new 'mod' to my bike, my buddy gives me hell, "can it outrun my bike?!?" he always says. Granted, it's a liquid-cooled, fuel-injected, aluminum-framed, plastic, thoroughly modern machine. Not exactly fair, but what the hey.
We did an old school, look for cops, 1...2....3.....GO! drag race out in the Hill Country today. I wish I could tell you all that I destroyed him, but I didn't. It literally was neck and neck, a photo finish, a tie. I shifted from 1-2 at redline and he pulled away, when I hit 3rd and opened those big mikuni carbs I pulled in front with a 'massive' surge of super-bonnie mid-range punch. I thought I had him. He caught up. By the time we both gave up (doing well over 100mph at this point) it was a dead tie.
The good news is, I still think there's some more power to be gained from my carbs with some fiddling with the needle position, so I'm hoping for a rematch soon. If not, then I guess I'll have to get an 1100 kit and some nitrous. That outta work.
Oh, he has $5500 in his sv, it is box stock. He bought it used with 900 miles on it. I don't really want to talk about what I have in mine....
(officer, this is a complete lie...
