MC Lift

I finally sprung for a lift, got the Sears one on sale. What a treat! It lifts great and stays put with the straps.I also got the small roller stool. Now I don't have to get down on my 60yr old knees.Got the bike really clean too.Best 60 bucs in a long time.

they do help a lot. especially if you have to pull off the fork, or rear wheel.

try and buy some younger knees while you're at it.

I got my lift & roller stool at Harbor Freight. I suspect the Sears units are better quality, but these work fine for now. The roller stool was only $9.99! I also have 60 year old knees, and they are much happier now.

Watch out for the oil filter when you use the lift. I usually wind up denting mine from the wood scraps that I use under the frame, then I worry about whether I damaged it internally and replace it for peace of mind.

Also be aware that the Bonneville is very rear-heavy on the lift. Don't remove the front wheel without supporting (or removing) the rear wheel.

Lift & filter

My filter doesnt come close to touching anything on the jack? You must be using some larger filter? Why the wood under the frame??? My jack has nice rubber pads on the fingers that hold the frame. Real simple- slide the jack under till it hits the side stand & pump while holding the grip till she sits level , then pump away. If your going to the top- I reccomend using the safety legs! Bud puts his Nightrain to the top w/o the legs & rubs, scrubs etc.No straps as well! Scares the hell outa me!!, but its his bike? This jack laid in someones back yard for years & shows it! I usually only take mine up till the wheels spin- if it let go would hit the ground & settle on the side stand which I leave down . Gotta love em!!

I use two scraps of wood, about 3x12 inches across and perpendicular to the lift pads. They sit under the frame rails.

This is how it was done by others on this forum when I got started with the lift, but I can't remember why I'm doing it, to be honest. It might have had something to do with clearing the filter (Purolator Pure One 14612), but what happens is that with the bike being jostled the wood ends up under the filter and denting it.

I could avoid this if I were more careful, or maybe I need to re-evaluate whether I need those pieces of wood at all.

PS Another hint for using the lift: It drops rapidly when you release it, unless you release it very slowly and carefully. It's a good idea to have the center stand down when you lower it, if you have one, otherwise the side stand, as the Captain says.

I have the larger harbor freight lift. I don't need any wood strips to lift my bonnie. I put one of the lift arms right behind the attachment point for the side stand. It clears the filter and balances well. Don't even have to hold it while I lift it up from the sidestand. It is very stable. The lift has very strong safety catches that ratchet up. After it is at the height that I need it, I ease it down to the first safety catch, so if the pump fails, it is not going anywhere at all. It is a great lift. Normally $72 it is sometimes on sale for about $59.
