In 150 years time, I can see a carburetor being the mystery object on an Antique Roadshow type TV show.
& it'll probably stump most of the experts too.

if you don't fix the FI is for you.
if you fix, carbs are better on the side of the road.

trouble with FI is a failure means parts purchase, a carb failure is usually dirt or adjustment.

If I were to run South America or Alaska where you're on your own, I'd want carbs. FI failures means you're animal food.

FI when it works is nice...but the name of the game is shop income...the old guys don't like shop expense and kids changing parts from a book.

after a FI BMW I specifically wanted Triumph carbs.

[quote=Gob-ny-geay;970952]Some Questions:

1.) Why haven't we heard from our European brothers about the new '08's with EFI. Hasn't anyone purchased one yet?

QUOTE]

Just try answer you No.1. It makes me an crazy to find 2007 mode in Oct, as an reason, that all the models were 2008 already only avalaible..., as many others mentioned here, i wanted the classical carb version, with petcock (no pumps, injectors..etc), finaly i found 2006 brand new one hanging in one dealership with a litle discount only.
The things, in EU does not work like in US, due to the triumph price policy the cost is all the time high and does not change too much within each country (just a little bit) any many Europeans friends just wait to get some feed-back from US . In case of 2008 purchase, i thing, that many owners are not able to give you the right answer now, because it is still cold in most of EU countries (excl. Greece, Italy, Spain and South of France) and the bike season is just starting. Put the thread in summer time to get some feedback.

Yeah, the quaint carburetor sitting beside the equally quaint LCD flat panel TV, and what is this TV concept will be the question. Didn't that have video walls, or something else I can't fathom, back then in the pre tech age.

This probably is not a good comparison:
I have a 2007 T100 with Togas, re-jet & AI removed, no other mods. A friend bought the new EFI T100 with Tors, no other mods, 3 months ago; she has only ridden 700 miles so far. Having ridden both machines, the chassis, brakes etc seem the same. The EFI machine is slightly smoother on/off the throttle and through the rev range but doesn’t seem to have the same grunt or rev as quickly as my carburettored T100 – possibly because my engine has loosened up. Would I have EFI? No! Being an old bird, I prefer carbs, my other two bikes have them and I know how fix them.

Thanks guys, you have helped me a lot.

I have many carbs if I want to keep myself busy:
2xSUs on my Triumph Spitfire
2xStromberg Zenith on my Triumph GT6
But this time I think that the wisest choice for me would be the EFI

In the morning I am going to go to the local authorized dealer and confirm that I accept his offer...

I will go for the Black EFI Bonneville '08 with the following genuine extras:
- Alarm Immobilizer
- Tacho conversion kit
- Fuel cap lockable
- tank knee pads
- tank pad kit

I will keep the bike as it is, at least for the beginning of its life. Then I will have plenty of time to think of any other mods

Nassos

PS: by the way... speaking about Triumphs.... it may not be a Bonneville or a Thruxton. It is not even a Speed Triple... But it is a '66 Spitfire on the Greek mountains

Thank you very much

This car had been bought from a private seller in Wimbledon in 2001. Then I got it here in Greece, I imported it and registered it under Greek plates. Soon I started to restore through very strict factory standards. (Of course I kept it RHD)
It is a Mk2 Spitfire '66.

My other classic is a white Triumph GT6 Mk1 '67 which had been bought from England too. Also RHD I believe that these two and the Black Bonny will be soon friends...

One other point to consider

I like FI. However, there's only one other issue that might be of concern. I have not seen a comparative riding report on how the FI Bonnie responds to the throttle compared to the carb'd version. I'm not referring to WOT response, but in how the FI bike responds from low speed, part throttle acceleration, etc. I think the term is 'driveability', or in this case, 'rideability'.

I've owned FI equipped BMWs that had FI that was dialed in nearly perfectly, and other models that were 'edgy', and overly-sensitive to throttle input (not to mention the infamous 'surging' issue on the first run of the Oilhead 1100cc flat twin).

A carb'd Bonneville, with minimal work (minor rejetting and tweaking the pilot screw) can be a sweet running bike indeed. If the FI bikes don't run spot on, you'll be dependent on either Triumph or an aftermarket chip supplier to cure any first year FI issues.

The Keihins are rock solid carbs. I seriously doubt you'd spend more than minimal time with the Keihin carbs once you had them set up the way you want, although I suspect your experience with the SU carbs on your Spitfire may have encouraged you to consider an FI-equipped Bonnie.

Good luck and good riding no matter which model you choose. I'd try to ride both versions before deciding (though the carb'd version in stock jetting may not perform as well as the FI bike).

Bob
