my guess, especially in that location, is that it's cosmoline not oil. Clean it up and see if it comes back.

cosmoline is a thick heavy oil used to pack the bike in for shipping. They ship these things greased up like a cookie sheet to avoid corrosion during shipment. Part of the dealer's setup is cleaning all that crap off the bike to make it look like new. It's tough to get it all off, so some of it runs off and down the motor when you ride it (get the motor hot).

Plus, if you're going to have an oil leak, it wouldn't be at the top of the cover. It does look like it could be coming from the cylinder base gasket, but I haven't heard about that gasket leaking.

So it's not just Harley!

Looks like your Primary is leaking like mine was. Mine started about a year after I got it but I lived with it for 8 more years until I finally replaced it 2 weekends ago. At least yours is under warranty. Take it back.....

In this picture you can see how bad it was leaking all around the edge. Yup, that beautiful black outline is it!

ok i went out there to peak around and it looks like there is some of it in the between the cooling fins so maybe that is the source and it is driping down and collecting there, like you said! ~sigh of relief~

I'm with Sweat.I'll bet it's cosmoline. They cleaned my Scrambler for over an hour, and it still had some cosmoline dripping off it after the 23 mile ride home from the dealer. They didn't get between the fins real good, and there was some running down the cylinders on the cases.Like he said, wipe it off,and see if it comes back.

Cosmoline is brownish and sticky.Wipe your fingers over it and see.The break-in oil Triumph specs is a dino-synth blend, and is thin and slippery, and almost clear. It even looks like cosmoline in your pic.

Don't worry-Be happy.

Cheers!

It wasn't quite so much as a leak but more like a "seep". It never was enough to actually drip. Just enough to dirty things up. I'm not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination but I got tired of it and finally got my butt in gear.

I've never heard of cosmoline but I'd listen to these guys. Besides being friendly, they tend to know a "tad" about their Triumphs!!

So with true Family Feud fashion I say:

"Survey Says - I wouldn't worry about it!"
