I read the eBay post once, but couldn't figure what had caused the failure to occur. Did something get jammed between the gears in the primary drive?

Happens alot
http://www.triumphrat.net/modificati...gs-broken.html
after I posted this I found several posts describing the starter gear shafts breaking on older models. Triumph fixed mine even though it was 6 months out of warranty.

"Selling for a friend"
Run that through the BS filter and it comes out "I am trying to avoid all liability for the actual condition of this bike, which I am knowingly and willfully misrepresenting to make it sound better than it really is"

Considering what I've read on this forum about this problem, I'd gather the evidence and ask Triumph to make at least partial restitution, maybe supply the replacement parts, especially considering the low mileage on the bike.
PS I don't see that he's misrepresenting the bike.

I wasn't saying anything about this ad in particular, but in general red flags start going up when I see someone "selling on behalf of a friend".

Man!! that would really suck.
This is the first I have heard of this happening.
I just had mine apart a couple of weeks ago.
If he was closer and I could score it for a good price that is some thing
I could fix.
I have access to a tig machine and I have been tig welding aluminum
for about 25 years I have done many casings.
And I just so happen to have a very good friend with a well equipped machine shop.
