My first vid. Pt Douglas Rd. Nth Qld

I've had a bit of a learning curve to climb, to find out how to work my new motocom camera. But I've finally got some footage that's worth sharing.
I'm still trying to find the best position for the camera.
This one was shot from on top of my Shu-Roo, which gives a good view, but shakes a bit too much for my liking.
I've also had it gaffer taped on top of my helmet, which gave a good picture, though unfortunately I accidently deleted it (part of the learning curve).
But I didn't like having all the wires & stuff on me.
It was really uncomfortable, & my movements kept loosening the connections (& ruining the shoot).
I've currently got the adjustable camera mount, which came with the kit, stuck to the top of my front brake's master cylinder on a rubber block.
But I haven't had a chance to try this set up yet, so I'll give it a run up the mountain tommorow, to see how it goes.

BTW This also my first attempt at video editing too, so please excuse any glitches. I can only improve
Anyway,enjoy the ride.

Thanks Scratch! Beautiful scenery and the bike sounds great - couldn't make out a word you were shouting, though!
If you put the camera where you could see the dials, would the Shoo Roo get in the way of the view ahead?

You can see the dials from the helmet position, & the Shu-Roo's no bother.
The easiest place to mount it would be on the hadlebar brace, & that would definitely show the dials, but I think the screen would distort the image too much (though I should try it to be sure)
I'd like to perfect the helmet mount, as it's good for panning around & showing the scenery.
The problem with the helmet mount that's in the kit, is it mounts on the bottom of the helmet, & the wall of my helmet fills the upper 10% of the picture, which is really distracting & annoying.
But it's early days yet, & I'm sure that a little experimentation, along with advice from members who've already mastered a motocom, will soon find the optimum mounting points.
I'd like to find a couple of good positions, so that I can shoot the roads from different points of view, & edit them together.
Once I get a lot of footage, I'd like to make a docu-tour of Nth Qld, showing some of the roads that I've posted about.
& then I should be practiced enough to take some good footage of my Top End Safari that I'm hoping to embark on this Dry Season.
Hopefully, it might even be broadcast quality.

I haven't bought a movie camera yet, but the problems you talk about seem to be common to everyone who has. Someone posted a couple of great videos just a few days ago (can't remember who), but the screen did slightly distort things - although not as much as I would have imagined.

Did you see Long Way Round, with Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman? They had cameras fitted into the tops of their helmets. No doubt they're expensive as hell and involve boring a hole through the top of the helmet, or some such thing. But I'd love to know what set-up they used, and if there's a similar system that's more accessible to us down here on Planet Earth.

A tour of Queensland would be a hit with me, and plenty of others, you can be sure. I've always loved Europe, but I get a feeling of awe when I see the landscape and wildlife of Oz and NZ. I hope you carry the project through, Scratch.

Smile first video

Scratch,

For a first video it was a good attempt, lovely tune from the pipes too. I'd love to hear it on full welly up and down the gears!

My first and only attempt at on-bike footage was with a passenger holding the camera, not realising that a hard drive camera doesn't like bumps. I've since been advised that there is a way round that by using a big memory card for the bumpy stuff.

Anyhow, editing. I can't get the hang of it. All my editing was done by my youngest daughter, who went off to Dundee university last September. Around the same time my youtube director's career ground to a halt.

Thumbs up

Nice! I have no idea what you were saying - but the video looks pretty smooth and it was nice hearing the twin.

Nice video Scratch. Good to see a video filmed riding on the 'proper' side of the road! <duck>

Good Job on the first vid.

I am still experimenting with the best placement of my video cameras. I am thinking about doing a remote mic hack on my rear facing camera to get road/motor noise.

Quick tip for video creation for Youtube. I render my final video at 320x240, 24 fps, WMV w/VBR, 90% quality. (It is a custom setting, you will have to look around in the video production software you use) Those settings yeild a movie that runs 4-7mb per minute.

I think Odysseus was talking about my videos.

Time to ride...

Yeah, the mic's pretty dissapointing. I've talked straight into it, with no other noise, & I still sound muffled (though understandable).
I think they must set the volume low, to cope with exhaust screaming superbikes (& deristricted Hinkley's)
I had it mounted on the top mount of my screen, so I could yell right at it. But I think my fullface helmet probably blocked a lot.
I've tried fitting the mic inside the helmet, but it's uncomfortable, & it means I'll be wired to the bike, which I don't like the idea of.

Anyway what I'm saying there, is that I'm riding through Ellis Beach, 20klms nth of Cairns, & the bar on my left is a favourite biker destination, which is usually surrounded by bikes, especially on a Sunday, & I'd never seen so few bikes there on a Sunday Arvo before. (Don't you feel better, now you know that vital info?)

Well the Sun's just coming up, & it looks like clear skies up in the mountains.
So I'm going for a quick strop up the hill to try out the new camera position, & get back in time for the Superbowl (10.00AM local time)
Expect more footage soon.

I might save the commentary until I've mastered voice-overs.
