Trail Bike
I love my Bonnie but where I live there are a lot of trails and fire roads. I was thinking about picking up a trail bike something like a Honda SL350 or XL350, maybe a Yamaha DT250, or 360 something like that. Any suggestions I am doing this on the cheap $750.00 to $1500.00

I had a XR200 Honda and it was a great bike but I sold it and really regret it now. The bike that I want now is a Suzuki DR350, these bikes have a very loyal following and people take them everywhere, found one for $1900 with 3000 miles but didn't get it (wish I did).
You should be able to find a bike for what you want to spend but it may be an older model.

+1 on the Honda. The XR is as tough as you can get. Just be sure you get a bike that is light enough for you to lift from the rear end. Comes in handy!

Look into the yamaha tw200. I have one and its great fun off road. (its a dual purpose bike) It has the wide tires and very low 1st gear--great for pulling up hill and it weights 260lbs.

If you're gonna get something dual sport, I'd think about a 400cc or there-abouts. My KLX250 is an awesome bike on the trails and can run 70 mph on the blacktop - but it's kinda scary pulling into traffic (no passing power) and crosswinds from passing semis can cause you to crease the seat (very lightweight). - a DR400 or a KTM 400 or 450EXC would be my suggestions. If you're gonna truck to trails/fireroads - then a four stroke 250 is all you'll need. XRs, YZ (Fs), the KLX 250s/300s.
Try looking in your local craigslist - bunch of good deals right now cause it just after xmas.

I have no complaints about my Yamaha 250. Its proven itself to be strong and reliable.
I'm not as adventurous as some so I don't miss the extra power that a 350 or 450 will give. For me the lighter weight of the 250 has its advantages. I would only go the bigger size if I had to ride a long way on asphalt to get to my favourite ride in the forest / fire trail etc.

The main question is whether it needs to be street legal or not. If not, you have tons of choices. If so, not as many in your price range for anything that is not beat to death. The Suzuki DR350 suggested above is an excellent choice for a dual purpose bike, but I have never seen one in your price range that was worth owning. Good luck.

Bought my XR200 (83) for $700 two years ago and like I said previously I wish I never sold it. It looked and ran like new, I used this bike on wildland fire duty on some pretty rough Colorado fire roads and trails, never let me down, always started and great fun in the snow. These bikes are great and quite inexpensive.
There is an XR now on ebay in New Jersey for $800.
