Vetical Twins Are For Wimps!

& so are triples. Even the 2300cc in line motor in the Rocket 3 pales next to this bad boy.

Meet the new kid on the block. The JRL Radilal, from the land of the brave & the free (where else)
It has 2800cc's in a 7 cylinder radilal motor (from a plane!)
& if 7 cylinders sounds a bit ho-hum. There's a 9 cylinder version in the pipeline.

For those curious enough to know more (or mad enough to want one) here's a link with a yuotube clip of the bike on a dyno.

I'd finish with some smug "only in America" type remark. But as I posted Lucky Keiser's 5000cc RR Merlin drag bike last week (& he's an Aussie). I'd be leaving myself wide open. Wouldn't I?

Seems that if it can be thought of it can be done. Impractical but cooler than snot. I'd imagine that the difference in cylinder temperature is quite extreme from front to back. Also, the rider would fry. Makes me wonder if the thing is even rideable for very far. Still, I'd like to see it in action.

I refuse to except it into the OCC Class without spinning rims or flashing lights...

I love that bike! I've posted pics both here and in the BHO. Here's a wild one that was no doubt done with photoshop.

I don't think it'll travel too far, with that tiny tank on it.
I was surprised at how little vibration it had, on the dyno. But I still think the massive gyroscopic forces, generated by the motor, would affect the bike's handling.
There are better aero motors to utilise. A lot of small planes have 6 cyl boxer motors, which would go great in a cruiser (light & durable).
Got to give them points for trying though. It can't have been easy getting the thing to work.

Out of the 2 pics of the bikes you posted, only one is ridden with any purpose....

Radial engines are cool, but they mounted it the wrong way. They should have turned it 90 degrees so all the cylinders would receive proper cooling airflow. Plus it would look much cooler that way.

But then again, it would also look much cooler if it weren't a chopper.

radial

i saw, years ago in a motorcycle magazine a bike with a 3 cylinder radial mounted on the front wheel. the engine rotated at half the tire speed for cooling. It was a very old German bike, but I dont know the brand or year.
