Are you still there Ohio?
Everytime I see the news, its about another record snow fall hitting the U.S. mid-west. & they all seem to end with the conclsion that Ohio's going to bear the brunt of it.
Now I know that there are plenty of forum members in the Buckeye State (?).
So would one of them like to up-periscope & tell us if anything is still moving outside?

TV likes to sensationalize. the arctic air coming across the lakes does the "lake effect", so S and E of the lakes always gets a foot more than most...but not to worry, they know it's coming and have the equipment in place...and snow in flat country is not a problem...you just tunnel thru the 12' drifts and life resumes. Back in the 60's when I had to walk to school...uphill both ways...I can recall 2-3' snowfalls that didn't even cancel school...now-a-days if a cloud passes the sun they call a 2 hour delay.
beneath the whole Great Lakes region is the residue of an old salt ocean, and they have salt veins bou cou to dig in.
I say sprinkle water and stick their feet in situ for a couple months like a tongue to a flagpole.
a real record snowfall is 3'+...I've personally dug out of 42+ inches before (a meter for you metric folk). I'm in a south suburb of Pittsburgh...foothills of the mountains... Ohio people are sissies...and their women are easy...
if you must worry about snow folk, watch Buffalo NY near Niagara Falls...they get hammered yearly...or the Rockies...them suckers get 10' before they even wax their skis.

Scratch, my old buddy, here's a full report as of 6:00 am: 17 degrees. Everything covered with snow. Not a creature is stirring. No definite riding plans set as of yet today. Enjoy your summer.

It's not all bad. Next week it's supposed to be up in the '50's and I can be back on the road. Until then, I have to settle for this view out my front door.

It varies a LOT in a relatively few miles, Scratch. Up around the lake they get "lake effect" snow and many areas up there had over a foot this go around. Here, 100 miles south of Cleveland, we have only a few inches. Temp last night was 8F and high today about 23F expected. But we are to have a warm up to 50 by Sunday and then into the low 50s for two or three days, with some rain thrown in. All the snow will be gone here by Sunday with temps above freezing Fri and Sat, so if it isn't raining much I imagine I'll be riding again no later than Monday.
Bob, Jay, Rich and the other guys further north may not fare as well, but they should hit the upper 40s for a couple of days as well.

I keep telling myself .... it'll be good for the water table .... it'll be good for the water table.
To put it in perspective, I pulled up some data for Marquette, Michigan. I've seen snow there on Memorial Day weekend! Makes Ohio look like the sunny South, sort of! Now I feel better.
Size: 1841 Square Miles
Elevation: 600-1800 Feet
Physiography: Hill-lands
Growing Season: 80-120 days
Annual Precipitation: 31-33 inches
Average Snowfall: 90-140 inches

Scratch,
One thing that adds insult to injury in these snowy regions is that salt is used to melt the snow and ice on the roads. So even if we get a break in the weather here, many of us are reluctant to expose our bikes to the residue of salt on the roads, which is highly corrosive metal. Better to wait for a few cleansing spring rains.
January really isn't that bad. There is still some novelty and beauty in a snowfall. And sometimes there's Christmas money to upgrade the bike. Things get progressively gloomier through February and March. When it continues to snow into late April, that's when my wife takes away my belt and shoe laces.
