My Local. What's yours like?

Nah, not your local watering-hole. Your local ride.
You know, the one you always go on because you can't be bothered going for a proper ride, but still want to take the bike out for a run.
I've got a lot of choice when it comes to long, fast, straight backroads, as all the canefields are criss-crossed with an excellent network of bitumen service roads. & now the cane harvest is over for the year, they're quite safe too.
But I soon get bored of chasing a bit more speed out of my Scrambler. It's not what it's about anyway. So when I want to put a few more scratches on my centre-stand. I go here.

The Lake Morris Rd to Coperlode Dam, is the most challenging 16klms of bitumen within the city limits. & is only 4klms from my place.

The lower section is relatively easy, & offers great views of the city, as it climbs the Whitfield Range

Looking East across Cairns City & Trinity Bay, with the Yarabah Ranges in the background.

The road narrows & gets a lot trickier, when it enters the jungle canopy, at the top of the range.

The road is challenging, bordering on downright dangerous.

Lot's of tourists (including coaches) use this road, which is a narrow access road that was deliberately built to keep speeds low (it has a 40kph speed limit the whole way) So it's not for the uninitiated, & I'd reccomend a lot of care, until you've got it mastered.
& then take more care, as you don't know the road as well as you think you do.
It's that kind of road. & that's the attitude I always have when I ride it.

However the destination is well worth the challenge.

Lake Morris was created in 1976 when Coperlode Dam was built across Freshwater Creek to give Cairns the best water supply in Oz.
That water is over 100 ft deep, & the dam is currently at 97% capacity at the start of our rainy season! It doesn't even need pumping, as the whole city's on gravity feed.
With all those clouds rolling in, I'm glad I stayed local today, yet still got a decent ride in.
So where do you go to get your jollies?
When you've only got time to squeeze in a quickie.
Ride Always
Scratch
Major Disclaimer: If you haven't got the message already. This is a very dangerous road! If you're going to do it. Take a lot of care!
N.B. Monday's the best day to ride it, as the kiosk at the lake is closed, so the tourists don't go up there as much. Just don't expect to get a drink or an ice-cream at the top (unless you bring it with you)
But watch out for cyclists & joggers, at all tmes.

We also have a major reservoir, Loch Raven, surrounded by wooded land, just a few miles north of Baltimore, with smooth paved twisty roads that go around it. It's a fun ride, I can do it from my house in 45 minutes total, and it's beautiful.

I feel lucky that I have such a nice ride so nearby, and I often take this ride when I only have the time or inclination for a "quickie". The only drawback is that it is closed from 8am until 5pm on saturdays and sundays, only open to bicyclists and pedestrians, but that's nice too, for them.

PS This thread will probably be moved.

You post the greatest pics; they match your "voice" and make all of us greenish with envy. Thanks, and keep it up!

My local ride is a slow 20 miles up the west side of the Mississippi River on the Minneapolis side, then over to St. Paul and down the east bank of the river. It is almost like a meditation for me.

Great Vid JohnyC. I like how you end up at a race track. & the trials footage is hot. Is that you? You're a good rider, if it is
The highlands remind me a lot of Central Otago, in the Sth Island of NZ, which coincidently was settled mainly by Scots. They even still speak with a slight brogue, & use phrases like "going for a wee hurl on my bike" You'd feel right at home (only the roads aren't as busy)
Liked your roads too Sweat. They look like they'd be a lot of fun on a sunny day. Are they far from where you live?
Keep 'em coming folks.
It's about to start chucking it down outside.
So this is the closest to riding I'm going to get for the rest of the day.

the first 2 pics are about 75 miles (120km) from my place and the last one is probably 125 or so miles (193km) from my place. Both are what I consider to be a good long Saturday ride away. I live dead nuts in the city, 2 miles from downtown in the heart of the concrete jungle but the Hill Country is just a few moments away.

This is real close to home. 10 minutes and I'm into the National Park. Not a high speed run, but nice on the T100, Beemer, or W650, when she was still in the stable. On a weekday, there is no one there except the joggers and hikers.

http://s115.photobucket.com/albums/n...t%2031%202007/

I posted these previously on Halloween, but it's the only shots I have of the Park.

What I particularly liked about these photos was the fact that I used a disposable camera from CVS Drugs, took it back a couple hours later, had them dump the pix to CD. Not too bad for a $4.99 camera! And the fact that the Lucifer Orange on the fuel tank was THE right color for Halloween.

We are truly blessed! We love bikes. We own bikes. And it appears we all have favorite roads that make it a pleasure riding them.
